[Swprograms] Podding Along - Issue 323

Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion. I do it while “power walking” (most) every morning in what sometimes seems like a vain attempt to diminish the results of sitting behind a desk for 35 years. The act of putting one foot in front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by “podding along” while plodding along the mind also gets something useful to do. So it is with the time spent gardening, washing dishes, preparing meals and many other day to day activities.

Podcasting has grown to the point that it can justly be considered a medium all its own. Therefore, the attempt here has to be to highlight only a small portion of it, just one corner where excellence reigns.

Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s web site, most programs are made available through any number of other amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn.

Admittedly, these are thoroughly subjective recommendations, but my interests and tolerance for incompatible views are pretty wide-ranging. Here’s another in a continuing series of small samplings, offered in a 90 minute scope (more or less):

“Women in Commercial Fishing; the Motor Yacht Club; a Bridge between Ireland and Scotland”
SEASCAPES - RTE Radio 1
Trudy McIntyre is one of the few women involved in the commercial fishing industry in Ireland . Noel Sweeney met her in Dunmore East to speak about her working life. Vincent Delany speaks about his book, the 'Motor Yacht Club of Ireland'. It's a history of a club founded in the early years of the last century. (Vincent's book is available from Blurb.com/bookstore or from Vincent at delanyvincent@xxxxxxxxx; the books are 48 pages and cost €18.00 each). Hugh Oram has been looking at plans to build a bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland, not pie in the sky, he says, more pie in the sea. (25”)

“On the Farm: What’s Happening Around Rural NZ; A Taste for Dairying; Angus Bull a Thrill for New Owners; The Gift of a Farm; A Hilly Haven for Herbs"
COUNTRY LIFE - RNZ National
Winter sets in in the north and the effects of the drought are still being felt at the top of the South Island. Teina McIntyre and Cailtin McRae can't wait to find a job on a dairy farm. They are two of seven students taking part in Dairy NZ's first GoDairy free, training course for people looking at changing careers. Penny Hoogerbrug of Kaharau Angus Stud describes the nerve-wracking moments before she and her partners became the proud new owners of "Lot 8", paying more than $100,000 and setting a record for the highest price paid for a bull at an on-farm sale. Whitford dairy farmer Donald Pearson bequeathed his dairy farm and all its cows to New Zealand Young farmers. There are plans to build an education centre on the farm so that children from nearby Auckland can be introduced to agriculture and the career opportunities it offers. Banks Peninsula horticulturist Cornelia Holten established the KoruKai Herb Farm at Pigeon Bay with support from her husband Kai in 2013. She grows about 80 varieties of herbs - 40 of which she uses to make herbal remedies, skin care and teas. (51”)
