Sunday, May 13 2012:
Asia Calling
This week on "Asia Calling": Taliban teenager turns a new leaf. The
Taliban recruits hundreds of young boys in Pakistan’s notorious
Swat Valley every year. The surrounding tribal areas are a breeding
ground for future militants, and where many train to become suicide
bombers. A former guard to a senior Taliban member, one Pakistani
teenager has quit the hard line life and says he is ready to go back to
school. Mudassar Shah has his story.
Philippine Running Priest “Runs” With Post Workers. In
his last public act before a year-long religious seclusion, activist
priest Father Reyes has thrown his support behind Filipino postal
workers. On May 8 he kickstarted a charity run, where he acted as a
postman delivering letters from the workers to Philipine President
Aquino. The letters protested the recent string of jobs cuts for people
that have worked for company for decades. Madonna Virola has the story
from Manila.
India’s traveling boat clinics. Assam, a state in northeast
India, has the highest maternal mortality rate in the country. The lack
of medical infrastructure is one of the main reasons. Over three
million people in Assam live on islands around the Brahmaputra River
that flows across the state. For many islanders, boat clinics – a
joint NGO and government initiative – are the only means of
healthcare. "Asia Calling"’s Gayatri Parameswaran and Felix
Gaedtke stepped on deck in Assam.
A Taste of Bali in Brussels. On May 6, Belgium hosted the largest
Balinese festival held outside of Indonesia. The Ogoh-Ogoh festival
features giant Balinese puppets and traditionally marks Nyepi, or
Balinese New Year – a day marked by silence on the island of the
gods. The event was held in Pairi Daizi Park, a former monastery turned
international cultural park. Ging Ginanajar joined Balinese from all
over Europe at the unique festivities.

"Fresh Air"
"Fresh
Air" with Terry Gross, the Peabody Award-winning weekday magazine of
contemporary arts and issues, is one of public radio's most popular
programmes. Though "Fresh Air" has been categorised as a
"talk
show", it hardly fits the mould. Its 1994 Peabody Award citation
credits "Fresh Air" with "probing questions, revelatory interviews and
unusual insights". A variety of top publications count Gross among
America's leading interviewers. The show gives interviews as much time
as needed, and complements them with comments from well-known critics
and commentators.
