When it rains it pours. The week's "Media Network" newsletter from
Radio Netherlands announces that the Bonaire relay site will close.
RNW will continue to use shortwave; its services to North
America
(Dutch, Spanish I think) will be served via leased time from
Montsinery (French Guiana) and Sackville (Canada).
The number of transmitter-hours originating from the site has
decreased enough so that it's cheaper to just consolidate requirements
with other broadcasters and mothball the site.
So that's two of the three major Latin American relay sites designed
to reach North America (Antigua, Montsinery, Bonaire) to go dark. (I
didn't count Asencion -- because it primarily serves Africa these
days).
This news isn't yet posted on the weblog (
http://blogs.rnw.nl/medianetwork/) .
