[Swprograms] Fwd: E-Update: WBEZ adds two new shows on Saturdays!

This is an interesting development.

WBEZ is the NPR "think radio"-formatted station serving Chicago,
making it one of the USA's most important stations of that genre due
to the size of its market.

They are taking space that had been devoted to an NPR-produced program
and instead taking two CBC programs.

This makes WBEZ more of an "international broadcaster", it would seem.

It is interesting to think about the role NPR has today versus 25
years ago -- NPR is certainly a much more mainstream offering and
provides a more comprehensive view of world affairs than any domestic
commercial broadcaster does.

One of the reasons I got started listening was due to the diversity of
views shortwave offered vs. US commercial radio. BUT...had NPR been
as strong back in 1985 as it is today, and had it offered the "think
radio" format back then that is now popular. would I have bothered
getting interested in shortwave? Or would NPR's and other US Public
Radio offerings been good enough for me?

Not 100% sure how I'd answer that question today...

Ben heads to the Big Apple

Ben Calhoun here. You may or may not have heard—but after nearly a
decade with WBEZ, I'm leaving my post at the station. My wife's taken
a job in New York, and I'm leaving to join her there.

There have been few decisions in my life that have been so
bittersweet. Over the years, the WBEZ community has shaped my passion
for the work I love, given me opportunities of a lifetime, challenged
me and brought me immeasurable joy.

As I head east, I just wanted to express my deepest gratitude to you.
Until next time—many, many thanks. --Ben
