WORLD OF RADIO 1404 SUMMARY:
*XEXQ, San Luis Potosí, México, reactivated on 6045 after a couple
months; very weak with classical music; best times to try for it
*XETRA, 690, Tijuana, reported to change calls to XEWW, formerly the
SW calls of XEW in Mexico City
*Cuba not only jams Radio Martí, but also harmless musical shows from
Voice of America; R. Habana Cuba deserves to be jammed as payback
*RHC collides with VOA at 0500-0700 UT on 6180, both in English; VOA
doubles power, so who will cry uncle first?
*NBC Radio, St. Vincent, moves again, to 700, ex-710, ex-705 kHz
*Venezuela names its new SW transmitter site under construction ---
what else? After Simón Bolívar; long term project planning 30
`antennas`, whatever that means
*Venezuelan TV axes The Simpsons as bad for kids, replaces with
Baywatch [bad for adults?]
*Chuck Bolland`s harmonic on 3200.13 recording analyzed: sounds to us
like Radio Minuto, to others like Radio María (Guatemala), or Radio
Ilusión (Ecuador)
*HCJB Quichua service on 3220 heard at incredible strength in Florida
at 1000, despite being aimed straight up to minimize distant
propagation
*Radio Universitaria, Cobija, Bolivia unheard lately on 4732, but
Radio Tacana, 4741.48 widely reported
*Radio Nacional Argentina, heard on feeder frequencies 5835 or 5840
early UT Sundays
*Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel, Antarctica, reactivated, heard
in Europe on 15476 between 1900 and 2100; had been off all year
*Radio Africa, Bata, Equatorial Guinea, reactivated April 11 on 15190
after a long silence, only with American preachers, from 1700 past
2230; good signal in North America altho supposedly aimed at South
Africa. Does not ID between programs and final ID never mentions
Equatorial Guinea, but an address in Ghana [lasted only 7 days]
*The other SW transmitter at Bata, domestic service, had also just
been reactivated [and I left out the frequency: 5005]
*IRIN Radio has new broadcast via South Africa in Somali, 1730-1745 on
9665; also heard in Europe but some days of week Spain is also on
then, with imaginary German broadcast actually in Spanish
*Hargeysa, Somaliland, hard to ID for certain, but believed to be on
7120.37 around 1500-1700; Chad also on low side of frequency until
1600, and CNR-8 China in the way on 7120.0
*The media magazine you monitor with your mind, World of Radio 1404,
woradio at yahoo.com --- much more at http://www.worldofradio.org
*Thanks for financial support from Donna Kay Ring in Maryland who sent
a check in the mail to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702
*V. of Tigray Revolution, 6170, sometimes opens an hour early at 0256
instead of 0355
*Sines, Portugal site has new clients such as Sudan Radio Service,
17690, 1500-1600 daily, also 1600-1700 M-F, mostly in Arabic, English
IDs
*English from V. of Africa, Libya, 1400-1600 on 17725 ex-17600, //
21695
*Sicilian pirate heard on 4895 relaying FM stations there, April 6
between 1750 and 1825
*BBCWS` last remnant of SW to the western half of the world, Spanish
at 1200-1300 via Furman 9410 and Montsinéry 11860, fills last half of
program with music, sometimes pop, sometimes classical
*Deutsche Welle reduces German service on SW this season; journalists`
union discourages move toward Internet only, and expects more
languages to go
*New tribute site to the late Radio Berlin International, actually a
blog, http://radioberlininternational.blog.co.uk/ attracts those who
liked the station, nostalgic for the good old DDR [or add www.]
*Both English broadcasts from Lithuania to North America are blocked
by Firedrake jamming, since they both have Tibetan scheduled at same
time from VOA, RFA
*One English program remains from V. of Greece, Greek in Style, music,
Sunday 2305-2405 on 7475, 9420
*RFE/RL denigrates shortwave as ``outmoded`` while it is forced to
resume it for Armenia; Kim Andrew Elliott comments
*Radio Jordan remains absent from 11690 where it used to be in French
and English; if you hear French at 1600 now on 11690, it`s China
*Arabic on 10000 turns out to be reactivated spur from Jordan on 9830
*Iran`s A-08 schedule for relays via Lithuania; also R. Racja for
Belarus
*All India Radio, Khampur site near Delhi heard on 6065 instead of
6165 at 1230-1600
*Lao National Radio had English lessons two Saturdays in a row on
6130, but not the next week;
*External service English still heard in Japan until 1400 on 7145. And
has added online audio: http://www.lnr.org.la
*Info from Asia that China bought two Continental SW transmitters from
USA, then made hundreds of copies, accounting for China all over the
SW bands, notably jamming such as Firedrake, which was heard in
Europe on 27 frequencies at once
*Radyo Pilipinas A-08 schedule at 0200-0330, 1730-1930 in English,
Tagalog
*Electric bill for IBB Tinian SW transmitters adds up to $1921.50 an
hour
*New WZFN on 1100 is not from east of the Mississippi, but for North
Dakota from east of Fargo in western Minnesota; heard testing with 50
kW day, much less at night; official sunrise/sunset in April 1145 and
0115 UT
*Propagation outlook from Boulder, April 15: A & K indices peaking at
25 and 6 April 24; 20 and 4 on May 2; solar flux peaking at 80, April
21-28 ###
