The BBC's Russian service was taken off the air on Friday by its last
FM distribution partner in Russia, the local radio station Bolshoye
Radio, after the station's new owners said they were told by the
Russian authorities they could only broadcast their own programming.
The BBC said it would appeal to Russia's Federal Service for the
Supervision of Mass Media, Communication and Protection of Cultural
Heritage for the decision to be reviewed. The head of the service
told Russian news agencies yesterday the BBC could take part in new
tenders for frequencies.
