My 13-year-old daughter did her "National History Day" school project
January 2005 on the telegraph. We visited the archives of Western
Union down at the Smithsonian...well worth a visit.
Among the documents was a diary of the lead engineer (really the
construction manager) of some telegraph lines out in Utah, as well as
the company copies of telegrams that had been sent back in the 1880s.
What was fascinating was how much these telegrams cost...consider what
$1 was worth back in the 1880s; a $1 telegram in 1885 would cost
$19.20 in 2005 dollars....for ONE message...
Thanks for the heads-up!
