[Swprograms] Half hour Gerry Adams interview on BBCWS today

The Interview featuring Gerry Adams will be first
broadcast on Wednesday 30 November at 22.32 GMT on BBC
World Sevice. The Interview is a half-hour programme
on BBC World Service presented by Carrie Gracie.

Gerry Adams, the Sinn Fein President, has told the BBC
World Service he believes the peace process in
Northern Ireland offers lessons for the rest of the
world - including Iraq and the Middle East. He said:
"Dialogue works, listening to people works, the need
to cherish people, to be inclusive, the need for
governments to face up to their responsibilities in
these regards. So are there lessons for that in the
Middle East? Isn't it obvious? Are there lessons for
that in the Iraq situation? I think there are numerous
lessons."

Asked about the future of Northern Ireland and the
role Sinn Fein would play, he said: "If you want
evidence that there can be great change in the time
ahead, look at the great change that has happened in
the last ten years. From daily atrocity, we now have a
relative peace, and the popular will is that that
should endure. So with will on all sides we can bring
about an end to the long, difficult, fractious
relationship between the people of these two islands
and particularly an harmonious relationship between
all the people who live on the island of Ireland."

But questioned by Carrie Gracie, for The Interview
programme, Mr Adams, who is also MP for West Belfast,
refused to discuss IRA violence. He said: "Violence is
multifaceted. It isn't just a question of IRA
violence. You have the violence of the British state
and then you have the violence of the Unionist
paramilitaries, and I have yet to hear a commentator
asking any British minister in the detail that the
people in Sinn Fein are questioned."

He added that Sinn Fein was doing its "best to pursue
a peace strategy" and the IRA was "out of the
picture".

Asked about how his wife has coped with his many
absences and his commitment to the Republican
movement, he said: "I couldn't do what I did if I
didn't have [my family's] indulgence and their active
support and their love, so I'm very conscious of the
fact they allow me the space to do what I do? You'd
have to ask my wife [if she thinks all the sacrifices
are worth it]. It isn't for me to say. But when I'm
[at home] I'm very very good."

But did he do the washing up? "Yes, I clean the
bathroom and under the stove and clean the cupboard."
