RELIGION AND SOCIETY

Religion & Society
Erstsendung: 13.08.05 / 10.05h

The city of Cologne is hosting this year's World Youth Day which will begin on August 16th . Pope Benedikt XVI., will be in Cologne and he's invited young people from all over the world to come and join the event. One of the cultural highlights is an art exhibition at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in the city centre called "Ansichten Christi" - "Aspects of Christ". It presents major art works from private, church and museum collections depicting representations of Christ. Svenja Ueing visited the exhibition and brought back this report.

SPECTRUM

Iran and the Atomic Bargain (new) -
The International Atomic Energy Agency has been in emergency meetings to get Iran to freeze its atomic ambitions - which some fear could include nuclear weapons. It’s been suggested, as an interim solution, that Iran could conduct part of the atomic fuel conversion process and have the rest done elsewhere. But Tehran wants to complete the cycle itself. So, it’s removed United Nations seals to resume its own production. The move has sparked an outrage, with a trio of European nations - France, Germany and Britain - describing it as a "flagrant disregard" for a recent agreement. But all three Europeans have their own nuclear interests. Zulfikar Abbany speaks to the IAEA’s Melissa Flemming to find out why it’s all right for some states to have nuclear facilities but not for others.
 Spray-on-skin for burns victims (EDV 649953/new) -
Some might call it pure science fiction, but for others it’s become a medical reality: spray-on-skin. Doctors in Kassel have become the first in Europe to adopt a new technology that Australians use to treat severe burns. Surgeons can now spray on skin cells to encourage fresh growth over wounds. Ben Fajzullin has a report.
 Poached doctors (ex-IE) -
Medical organisations in Britain have called for a crackdown on the cross-border poaching of medical staff. They’ve accused the United States, in particular, of shipping off doctors and nurses from the developing world. Sub-Saharan Africa, they claim, is especially vulnerable to what they call "predatory recruitment". But the UK’s concern is not entirely altruistic. Such is America’s insatiable demand for healthcare workers, that Britain is worried that thousands of its own medical staff could soon be heading for the US. A report by Stephen Beard. French architects to stop extreme urban sprawl (ex-IE) -
Figures just published in France show the countryside is fast disappearing under concrete. More and more people are fleeing apartments in the city - in a wave of extreme urban sprawl. But France’s top architects are determined to counter this tendency. And they’ve built a new, model housing development to prove it. John Laurenson reports from Mulhouse in eastern France.
