was spawned by original late-70s Dunedin punks The Enemy, a band too
far ahead of its time for New Zealand. Musically Toy Love were a
collective, each band member adding to the sometimes chaotic, often
improvised sound, without obscuring the fact that these were genuine
pop songs. But when they hit the stage it was all Chris Knox -
snarling, bleeding, screaming his way through the show. Daring the
whole bloody audience to "come and have a go" if they thought they
were hard enough. Perhaps fittingly, Toy Love burnt brightly but
briefly, cramming a career's-worth of work and rock'n'roll adventure
into just 18 months. Twenty-five years later, it is acknowledged as a
seminal New Zealand band..
