Arts on the Air 
The Styriarte Festival - brings new insight to well-known works

Austria's second largest city, Graz, is the capital of the federal province of Styria in the south-east of the country. The Styriarte Festival was founded twenty years ago by a forward-thinking arts councillor who wanted to develop a closer bond with conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who grew up in Graz. The Styriarte Festival runs from around the last week in June to the end of July and the programme of performances aims to bring new insights into well-known works ranging from baroque, classical and romantic repertoire as well as presenting rarely heard masterpieces.

Sophie's World author Jostein Gaarder


The Norwegian born writer Jostein Gaarder was initially a philosophy teacher. His best-known novel, "Sophie's World", was a surprise international best-seller and has made Gaarder one of the most popular of contemporary Scandinavian authors. Indeed with over 20 million copies of "Sophie's World" in print, there is now an entire industry based around that one book - including a movie, a musical, a board game and even a CD-ROM. It has been translated into 45 different languages. (Interview Jostein Gaarder/Breandáin O'Shea)


Cirque Eloize - circus artistry at it's best 
Lots of shows are touring at the moment, but there is one group that you might not want to miss. They are from the Cirque Eloize, a French-Canadian circus-theatre group, and their new show Nomades. But don't expect to find any tigers jumping through hoops if you go - New Circus weaves circus artistry and acrobatics with dance into a theatre performance. It's no surprise that the group comes from Quebec, Canada. The city and the famous National Circus School in Montreal has become a kind of Mecca for flying trapeze artists, jugglers and other clowns of the New Modern Circus.
