INSPIRED MINDS
Thor Kunkel Author
Born in 1963 in Frankfurt, Thor Kunkel initially studied film and fine
arts in San Francisco but today, after living many years abroad, he
lives in Berlin. His award-winning debut "The Blacklight Terrarium"
brought Thor Kunkel into the German speaking world's literary spotlight.
His last book, Endstufe, or Final Stage has been the subject of much
controversy both in Germany and abroad. This is not surprising , as it's
an epic and daring new perceptive on the Third Reich, set around its
decadence and demise. Just week's before Endstuffe was due to be
released Thor Kunkel's then publisher, withdrew the book from
publication. News of the book's cancellation sparked an angry debate,
with critics rejecting Kunkel as a revisionist. What concerned critics
most was the authors' depiction of the rape of over one hundred thousand
German women by Russia's advancing Red Army, at the end of the war.
Historians the likes of Britain's Anthony Beevor, have told the story
before bur Kunkel is
the first German author of fiction, who has ventured to do the same.
And it seems to have jarred with Germany's post war culture of self
flagellation over its portrayal of evil in fiction. Especially the kind
of evil that has its basis in historical national fact. In this week's
Inspired Minds Thor Kunkel talks to Zulfiker Abbany about Endstuffe and
the controversy that followed the release of the book.
INSIGHT
How Europe is confronting the threat of further terrorist attacks
People around the world have reacted with horror to the string of bomb
attacks in London which left scores of people dead. A previously unknown
group calling itself the Organisation of Al-Qaeda Jihad in Europe has
claimed responsibility and threatened similar attacks against Italy,
Denmark and other "Crusader" states with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
But experts are warning that the atrocities represent a threat that
reaches well beyond the borders of those countries involved in the
US-led invasions. In this week's edition of Insight, we look at how
European Union institutions and European countries are co-ordinating
their travel, immigration and anti-terror policies to confront the new
and pressing challenge.
