SPECIAL PROGRAMME -
Disaster In Asia: The Week That Shocked the
World On Sunday 2 January tune
in to a special news programme looking at the impact of the Indian
Ocean earthquake. Owen Bennett Jones and BBC
correspondents across the region from Indonesia to Sri Lanka assess
the relief effort and ask how these countries can recover. Could
history offer a lesson to these devastated
communities?

The Congo The Congo is one of the world?s greatest rivers,
steeped in history and literary references. It?s also a measure of
DR Congo's recovery from four and a half years of conflict which
have claimed an estimated 4 million lives. Now that the Congo River
is navigable for the first time since war broke out, Mark
Ashurst travels along it from the rural heart of the
country to the skyscrapers of Kinshasa. En route, he hears ordinary
people?s experiences of war and disintegration, learns how they?ve
survived against all odds and sees how peace and recovery are
bearing up. From 17 January
The
State of the
Union Owen Bennett-Jones goes in search of
what ordinary Americans are thinking and feeling now that the dust
has settled on one of the hardest fought elections in US history.
With the help of some of the country?s best-known writers and
broadcasters, he visits places and people miles from the corridors
of power in Washington and New York. He asks what Americans think of
their place in the world and what they believe the future holds.
From 11 January
One Planet: Adventures in the
Tourist Trade Tourism
is the world?s largest industry. This new series, recorded on
location in holiday destinations round the world, looks at the
impact of this colossal business on the lives and environment of
local people. It also examines trends in holidaymaking and points
the way to more locally beneficial ways of managing tourism. We
visit Faliraki on the Greek island of Rhodes, Gambia and the Florida
Keys. From 29 December
Masterpiece: New Term in Kosovo Sandra
and Safete are two young girls living in the Kosovo village of
Rahovec. Sandra is Serbian and Safete is Albanian and they are two
of over 350 Albanian, Serbian and Roma children learning together in
Kosovo?s first multi-ethnic school. In addition to training parents
and teachers, the school is developing tolerance-building activities
for children and developing a culture of 'living together' which it
hopes will spread throughout the region. Neil
Trevithick introduces us to Safete and Sandra and reports
on the difficulties and successes experienced by the Rahovec school.

England and Snow Patrol, with roots in Northern
Ireland. From 3 January

portrait of contemporary multicultural London told through the story
of three ethnically diverse families. Email
your questions for either
author.

Discovery: Ocean Blues The oceans cover nearly three
quarters of the earth?s surface. They play crucial roles in the
planet?s climate, are home to many plants and animals and provide
work for millions of people through fishing and
shipping. But overfishing,
global warming and pollution are all having an effect on marine
life, with far-reaching
consequences. Andrew Luck-Baker
looks at the state of the world's oceans and asks the experts if
it?s too late to save our seas. From 18 January
Discovery: Running Rings Around Saturn The
Cassini-Huygens space probe reached Saturn in July 2004 following a
seven-year journey around the solar system. The size of a bus, it is
packed with scientific equipment to measure every vital statistic of
the planet, its famous rings and 31 moons. Richard
Hollingham investigates this mystical planet and the
possibility that one of Saturn?s moons, Titan, could be a colder
version of the Earth and could have once - or still could - harbour
life in its oceans of frozen hydrocarbons. From 5 January
Health Matters: Travels of the Mind Consultant
Psychiatrist Dr Raj Persaud returns to BBC World
Service with another series which discovers how different cultures
deal with mental illness. He talks to doctors, health care workers,
patients and their families in countries as diverse as Jamaica,
India and Iceland. From 3

Sports International: Ali's
Home To coincide with
Muhammad Ali's 63rd birthday, Mike
Costello visits the former world heavyweight champion?s
home town of Louisville, Kentucky, where Ali was born Cassius Clay
on 17 January 1942. He talks to Ali?s brother and meets his old
friends and colleagues at the house where he grew up. 12 January
Sports International: The Great Ethiopia
Run In
November 2004, Chris Dennis took part in the
biggest mass-participation race in Africa. In this report from the
event, he meets the legendary Ethiopian marathon runner, Haile
Gebrselassie and looks at the build up to the event which was held
to raise awareness of the importance of health, focusing on the
fight against HIV. 5 January
Sports International: The Icarus
Factor Some
sports stars just don't seem to have the ability to stay at the top.
They reach a pinnacle of success and then drop out of sight. The
golfer Ian Baker-Finch won The Open Championship but his game then
fell apart to such an extent that he couldn?t even pick up a golf
club; Jelena Dokic, was once the next big thing on the tennis
circuit but now, at only 21, she?s no longer near the top of her
game. Colin Maitland investigates. 19 January
Sports International: Frankie
Fredericks The
legendary Namibian sprinter Frankie Fredericks retired after the
2004 Athens Olympic Games. One of Africa's greatest athletes, he?s
now adjusting to life away from the track after a glittering
career. Alex Capstick travels to Namibia to
meet him and talk about his plans for the future. 26 January

Masterpiece: A Single Life Around 90% of the population of Australia now lives
within 50 km of the beach and the figure is rising as people move to
the coast. The effect on rural industry is obvious, but there's
also a human cost. As women leave rural areas for education and
employment in the cities, many men are left behind with little
prospect of finding wives where they outnumber women 10 to 1. From a
small bar deep in the interior, four male farmers talk to
Sharon Mascall about their solitary lives. 18
January
In Praise of God: An African
Thanksgiving Church
leaders from around Africa join together at St James?s Church,
Piccadilly, in London for a service of thanksgiving for the African
continent. The service features music and prayer from the Anglican,
Ethiopian Orthodox and Egyptian Coptic traditions. 8
