THE BUZZ - technology understandably explained with Richard Aedy. This week: "IMAGENation" - There is a lot of data out there - the trendy expression is data deluge. Getting all that data from the computer into the brain has so far proven difficult.
"Keys that talk to locks" - In the age of card-controlled locks it is expensive to connect every door to a central computer. But if only some doors are wired up security is compromised. "What's your address?" - We know where we live - most of us anyway - but only insofar as we know our address. Precise geographical position, in terms of latitude and longtitude, is another thing entirely. [%]

This week, Roger writes, "It’s now thirty years since Darwin, in Australia’s Northern Territory, was devastated by Cyclone Tracey and this week, using ABC Archives, Police records, and The Northern Territory Archives' Oral History Collection, the Australian Express looks back at Darwin before the storm, at the storm itself, the aftermath and the clean up and Darwin today. Cyclone Tracy formally came into existence at 10 AM on 21 December 1974, when it lay well to Darwin's north. By late afternoon on 24 December 1974 Darwin was cloaked by heavy and low cloud and it was experiencing ever stronger rain squalls and wind gusts. By about 10 PM the winds were causing physical damage. By midnight the damage was becoming serious, and it was apparent that Cyclone Tracy was about to pass across the city. Over the next six hours Tracy substantially destroyed Darwin and killed 65 people - 49 on land, and 16 at sea."
