science and the arts--drop in, share their stories and play a bit of
music.
0205
BACKGROUND BRIEFING - Radio National's agenda-setting, current affairs
radio documentary program. This week: "Violence at Home". A stronger
political emphasis on domestic violence and more proactive policing is
throwing up more cases of abuse in the middle classes. But getting help
or getting out safely remains difficult for women. Stephen Skinner
reports. [T;%]
0255
REPORTER'S NOTEBOOK* - background to the news.

AUSTRALIAN EXPRESS - a magazine about life in Australia, hosted by
Roger Broadbent. This week, Roger writes, "While the comeback of the TV
talent quest has spawned the careers of a few and seen the downfall of
many more - one “older Aussie idol” says she couldn't have made it
without them. Olivia Newton-John, known for her starring role in Grease
and other hits in the 80’s, is celebrating more than 30 years in
showbiz. This week on the Australian Express Olivia takes us back to
where it all began and we’ll also hear a track or two from her latest
CD - “Indigo – Women of Song”. For those who prefer more energetic
pursuits we find out what it’s like to paddle solo across the Gulf of
Carpentaria. That’s the large stretch of water just off the coast of
Northern Queensland and the Northern Territory. And for a whale of a
time the Australian Express joins a pod of Humpbacks as they migrate
from the temperate waters up north to cooler climes down south."
0532
ALL IN THE MIND - a weekly foray into the mental universe, the mind,
brain and behaviour with Lynne Malcolm. This week: "Rebels and the
Cause - The Adolescent Brain". The development of the adolescent brain.
No matter which way you look at it - adolescence is an inherently
turbulent time of life. Teenagers know it, parents certainly know it
and now science is beginning to understand why. Imaging technology is
revealing that certain parts of the brain don't fully mature until well
in to our twenties. And yet risk taking, impulsivity and poor judgement
- the traits so synonymous with adolescence, could be important for
healthy long-term development. [%]

the expense and hassle of owning a vehicle full time. Globally it
operates in more than 500 cities including Sydney and it’s about to
move to Melbourne. [T;%]
0905
THE SCIENCE SHOW - with Robyn Williams. This week: "Ten Years Saving
Chimps". We meet Debbie Cox, who started her career as a freckle-faced
vet nurse from Dubbo. Now she's coping with war zones in Africa saving
scores of orphan chimpanzees something she's been doing for ten years.

CORRESPONDENT'S NOTEBOOK
1505
AUSTRALIA NOW* - a 13-part series looking at the jobs Australians do,
the homes they live in and the way they spend their leisure. The series
also examines the environment that supports Australians, the political
structures that govern them and the way they get along with each other
and their regional neighbours. "Program #6: "Where the Jobs Are". The
Australian economy has made a dramatic shift from manufacturing to
service industries during the past three decades and these shifts are
reflected in the types of businesses and jobs that are generating
wealth in the 21st century. [%;T]
1532
AUSTRALIAN EXPRESS (refer to 0505)
1605
HINDSIGHT - social history. This week: "Unpromised Land". In 1942 a
plan was afoot to put Israel in southwest Tasmania. It ended
tragically. Critchley Parker Jnr, whose dream it was, died in his tent.
The new settlement he wrote, while starving to death, would be the
"Jewel of the Commonwealth". [%]

2255
PERSPECTIVE - informed commentary.
2305
THE EUROPEANS - broader historical and cultural perspectives on
European societies with Keri Phillips. This week: "Lisbon - Tagus River
Dreaming". This is a port city with a long pedigree, dating back beyond
the Romans, to the Phoenecians, Greeks and Carthaginians. You can still
see the effects of 400 years of Moorish rule, even though the Alfama,
the old town, had to be rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755. The
elegant tower, from which the explorers of the Age of Discovery in the
fifteenth century were farewelled, still stands on the river at Belem.
Sadly, the Industrial Revolution passed Lisbon by, as the city endured
decades of military insurrection, political chaos and dictatorship. And
since the end of the Salazar regime in the mid-seventies, urban
development has largely happened without the benefit of planning. [%]
2330
INNOVATIONS* - Showcasing Australian invention, enterprise and
ingenuity. [abc.net.au/ra/innovations/default.htm] for details. This

power us in the future. Design for a dishwasher that cleans without
water or suds and a new discovery to help switch off disease. [T;%]
Sunday
0005
KEYS TO MUSIC - Graham Abbott breaks down the barriers to enjoying
classical music for non-musicians, revealing basic concepts, discussing
composers and exploring pieces of music inside-out. This week:
"Machines in Music". In the early 20th century the sound of machines
was thought by many to herald the dawn of mankind’s golden age. This
inspired many composers to write music reflecting the sound and ethos
of the machine, some of whose work is explored in this program. Music
by Mosolov, Prokofiev, Antheil, Raymond Scott, James Ledger, Honegger
and Adams. [%]

SUNDAY PROFILE - In-depth analysis of the major news in Australia and
around the world with Geraldine Doogue. [www.abc.net.au/sundayprofile/]
for details. This week: "Peter Conrad and Ben Friedman". Peter Conrad
was born in Tasmania, and has become an internationally known critic,
teaching English at Oxford University. He charts Australia's
transformation in British eyes over 200 years, from a place of
punishment, with a harsh climate and weird animals, to a desirable
location, a lucky country. This is the theme of his Boyer lectures,
beginning this Sunday. Also Ben Friedman, professor of economics at
Harvard University looks at President Bush's ideas of an 'ownership
society', which encourages saving and investment rather than work. The
2004 Boyer Lectures are broadcast weekly on ABC Radio National each

in inner-city Buranda to hear how philosophical inquiry works and what
occurs when 26 children aged 8 to 10 years reason and think together
about the big questions of life. Philosophical inquiry is its own
process. It is not values education nor religious instruction. Find out
