passing 50 dollars a barrel more and more people are feeling the petrol
pinch and looking to pedal power for their travel needs. So this week
John Westland borrowed the Australian Express scooter and hit the
streets to find out what makes two-wheel transport so attractive to so
many. With animal rights, particularly those of sheep, very much to the
fore here in Australia, we try to find out what a national set of
standards for animal welfare would mean for the livestock industry. You
might be surprised to learn that cheerleading, that all American past
time is Australia's fastest growing sport. You might also be surprised
to learn it is in fact a sport. Yes, you can get points for shouting,
shaking your pompoms, cheering, tossing one another into the air, or
building human pyramids. Well just to prove the point, our reporter,
along with hundreds of people - girls and boys, men and women -
travelled from all over Australia to attend the third national
championships in Sydney. And did you know that buildings consume 32% of

40% of our air emissions! Enter the Green Building Council of Australia
which is now rating the environmental friendliness of large buildings."

HINDSIGHT - social history. This week: "Sweet Sorrow". Between 1879
and 1916 thousands of Indian indentured labourers were sent to Fiji to
work in the sugar plantations. This is the story of the social,
cultural and political fall-out as told by the descendants of those
original labourers. It is now 125 years since the first Indian worker
was sent to Fiji. Over the years 60,000 were transported. They were
mostly rural and often uneducated labourers who operated under strict
articles of indenture which, according to historian Brij Lal,
'reflected aspects of slavery'. Many who signed up had been duped. Some
were virtually kidnapped. Once in Fiji, however, most became resigned
to their fate, working out their five year 'agreement' - a word
corrupted by the workers into 'Girmit'. By the 1940s, the 'Girmitia'
Indians outnumbered the indigenous Fijians, causing ethnic tensions
unresolved to this day. After the coups of recent years, thousands of
Indo-Fijians fled to Australia and New Zealand, earning the poignant
title of the ‘Twice Banished’. [%]
