PICK OF THE MONTH:   CENTRAL AMERICA - LEGACIES OF REBELLION

In the 1980s, stories of revolution in Central America dominated the headlines, but these days little international attention is paid to the region.  This month, former BBC correspondent Mike Lanchin returns to the place he made his home for 15 years to find out what has happened to the passion and idealism.

PICK OF THE MONTH

<> CENTRAL AMERICA: LEGACIES OF REBELLION
4 x 25 mins | from 4th

In a four-part series, Mike Lanchin, a former BBC correspondent who lived in the region for 15 years takes us back to the region became synonymous with civil war and political strife in the 1980s.  He, like many other Europeans and North Americans of his generation ? the so-called ?Sandalistas? ? was first drawn to Central America by the spirit and idealism of the young revolutionaries in Nicaragua and El Salvador.

He meets key actors and ordinary players from those heady revolutionary days ? some now in government, many living ordinary lives, others disillusioned with the past and present, and most trying to make ends meet in a very different world ? and asks them where the revolutionary zeal that set the region on fire has gone. How far has Central America come along the road to peace and democracy?

On 5th July, Mike travels to the former state-run coffee farm in Nicaragua where he picked coffee as a volunteer in the mid-80s. He meets some of the farmers he worked with, then key supporters of the leftist revolution, and hears of the changes in their lives and country. He also meets Europeans who stayed on after the revolution came to an end.

In neighbouring El Salvador 70,000 people died during 12 years of civil war between guerrillas and the US-backed government. On 12th July, Mike revisits his wife?s family home in the north of the country, the scene of some of the worst fighting. Former rebel fighters, some now in government posts, some working as police officers, discuss whether the war was worth fighting. Mike also puts that question to a man alleged to have bankrolled right-wing death squads in the 80s.

He visits the refugee camp in Honduras where his in-laws spent two years while on the run from El Salvador?s civil war and finds out how Honduras has been affected by being caught in the middle of the civil wars raging in the region. There is now a new war in Central America, this time against violent street gangs, and Honduras once again finds itself centre-stage [19th].

Panama was once home to the US military?s largest Latin American base. Mike Lanchin discovers that it was also the place where leftist guerrillas in El Salvador and Nicaragua found sympathy and support for their cause. As home to the world?s largest inter-oceanic canal, Panama is today a budding financial and trade centre. On 26th July we hear from those who have helped transform the country - and meet Panama?s new president, who once fought alongside Nicaraguan rebels.

All Passion Spent?

"Apart from the intense heat rising off the tarmac, what struck me most as I set foot for the very first time on Central American soil, was the huge banner strung high above the terminal buildings at Nicaragua's main international airport. 'Benviendos a Nicaragua Libre!' - 'Welcome to Free Nicaragua!' it shouted in bright red letters."

<> TALKING POINT - What is America's Global Role
55/40 mins | 4th

As America celebrates Independence Day on Sunday 4th July, Talking Point will be discussing the global role of the world's only superpower in the 21st Century.  In terms of military superiority it has no equal and as an economic power-house its products and culture, from McDonalds to Disney, have infiltrated cultures all over the globe. Despite President George W Bush's insistence that the US has no imperial ambitions, the word "empire" is increasingly used by academics and pundits when talking about America's role in the world. The ubiquity of American power and influence is both admired and reviled around the globe. In particular, American foreign policy post 9/11 and the war in Iraq have been the subject of much condemnation worldwide. Is the world's only superpower also an imperial power? Does it rely too heavily on military superiority to influence the world? What is America's role in the 21st Century? Presenter Robin Lustig will be joined by guest Sydney Blumenthal, the writer and former senior advisor to President Clinton to discuss the issues.

<> THE INTERVIEW - Bob Taft
30 mins | 3rd

Bob Taft is the Governor of the American state of Ohio, which has picked the winner in every American presidential election in the past 40 years. In The Interview on 3rd July, Carrie Gracie asks the Republican Governor what he can do to make sure that it goes George Bush's way again this time. It's not going to be easy in the wake of 200,000 job losses in the state and divisions over American actions in Iraq. But Bob Taft and the Republicans have a few tricks up their sleeves.

<> MASTERPIECE - Beauty Kabul Style
1 x 25 mins | 19th

A beauty salon is not usually the first place one would look to as a symbol of freedom and empowerment for women, but in the Afghan capital a small business offering hairdressing represents opportunities for women to make a living.

Clients travel along dusty, bumpy roads from outlying villages to have make-up applied for a special occasions. They arrive shrouded in burqas and leave the same way. But when inside the salon, where no men are allowed, their hair is elaborately styled and make-up in vibrant colours is applied. They can have a photograph to take away with them, but the only people who will see their new faces are other women and close family members.

In this programme, we hear the personal story of two sisters who have established their own salon in the city. The use of beauty parlours and hairdressing salons continued in secret throughout the time of Taleban rule and women risked severe punishment to run, or even to visit these places. We find out why the beauty salon is so significant to the lives of many Afghan women.

<> BRIDGING THE DIVIDE
1 x 25 | 6th

140 years ago, Indians were first brought into South Africa as indentured labourers by their colonial masters. Ever since, relations between the African and Indian communities have been generally uneasy. The apartheid regime?s forced segregation effectively prevented cultural and social integration but, even in the post-apartheid era, the two communities kept their distance,

perpetuating mutual suspicions. This programme looks at the historical background to the Indian presence and considers how relations between Africans and Indians are developing in the new South Africa today.

<> EVERYWHERE A STRANGER
1 x 25 mins | 13th

Myroslav Kuyaldin is a very popular television presenter and a musician in Kiev, Ukraine. As one of the very few black Ukrainians, he can never really blend into the country of his birth but in his media career, this distinctiveness has proved an asset. The price he pays is to constantly feel regarded as a stranger in his own land.  For many years he has kept a short note left by his Nigerian father who returned to Africa on the completion of his studies. His mother and grandmother have given him some accounts of his father but details remain sketchy. He knows the difficulties and embarrassments they faced bringing him up, the only black child in a uniformly white society. Now that he is married with a family of his own, the pressure to talk to his own son about his origins has inflamed his curiosity. So his dream is to go to Nigeria, to follow the clues which hopefully will lead to a reunion with his father. Also, he has become passionate about reclaiming the other part of his identity.

A
n African among Ukrainians, he journeys to the promised land of Nigeria to pursue his search. He has a few vague clues and willing helpers. But will he now find himself a Ukrainian among Africans, always condemned to be the odd one out? Above all, will he succeed in finding his relatives? And if he does succeed in tracking his father down, will he come forward to embrace a long lost son or will he simply refuse to have any contact at all?

Throughout his quest, on his journey from Kiev to Lagos, he records his thoughts and feelings in a daily audio diary. These reflections, the story of his failures and frustrations as well as his successes become the backbone of the programme ? the story of Kuyaldin?s journey back to African soil.

<> LOVE
4 x 25 | from 20th

What is love? Physical, emotional, spiritual, we feel it but do we understand it? We sing, write and talk about it. We actively seek it and generally feel much better for it. It can creep up and overcome people when they least expect it or it can be learnt over the years.

In four
programmes, we look at the course that love takes through our human existence ? from a newborn baby?s demand for unconditional love and the starry-eyed love of a teenager to when the physical need for love is overtaken by cherished memories. If you?ve ever felt it, you?ll know what it is, but many people do wonder if they have ever truly been in love. Join the anthropologist Dr Helen Fisher and hear a variety of perspectives from around the world as people talk about their experiences of the most important human emotion.

In the daily series which brings you the best in modern and classic writing, Hillary Rodham Clinton reads from her memoirs, reflecting on her early career, her marriage to Bill Clinton and her eight years at the White House. This is a very personal book from a woman whose resolve proved the bedrock of her husband?s presidency.  If you want to know what was said behind closed doors about Monica Lewinsky and ?that dress?, or what it felt like to be a wife who was so publicly humiliated, you'll have to hold out until the final episode ? it?s certainly worth the wait.

<> REPORTING RELIGION

30 mins | continues

Trevor Barnes presents essential listening on how religion shapes major news events, and provides analysis and debate on religious and ethical issues.

On 4th July, the programme includes a feature on the handover of Iraq, assessing what role religious leaders need to play now.  Sistani? Moqtada? We explore the balance between religious Iraq and secular Iraq and the balance between Shia and Sunnis Muslims and how they justify the violence.

There's also a discussion about modern day martyrdom based on comments by the Roman Catholic Cardinal in Kampala, who recently asserted on a British television programme that people who don?t wear condoms to prevent HIV/AIDS even though there could be a risk, are ?martyrs?.  Is this really martyrdom? Can the church really justify this?  Is it ethical and acceptable and what is defined as martyrdom?

And this week's news round with Vicky Ntetema comes from Tanzania and includes a story about a politician who?s threatened an opponent with a so-called Islamic death threat.
