HOT SHEET FOR THURSDAY JULY 1, 2004

-- RADIO ONE --

1. THE CURRENT:

(copy to come in later edition)

2. SOUNDS LIKE CANADA:

A special Canada Day treat...Shelagh Rogers welcomes k.d.
lang into the Sounds Like Canada studio for a preview of her
new CD "Hymns of the 49th Parallel" due out at the end of
this month. That's Sounds Like Canada, this morning at 10
(10:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.

3. OUTFRONT:

In China, there is a saying: "the moonlight is brighter in
your hometown". That didn't stop Violet Zhang from coming to
Canada to get a master's degree and, she hoped, a brighter
future. But things were tougher than she expected, and if it
hadn't been for the surprise intervention of the "great
power blackout" last August, she would have given up and
gone back to Beijing. Hear her story on OutFront, this
morning at 11:45 (12:15 NT) on CBC Radio One.

4. THE CANADA DAY FESTIVAL OF ECLECTIC MUSIC:

Join host Stan Carew live from Lower East Ambrosia, Nova
Scotia this Canada Day for The Canada Day Festival of
Eclectic Music. How eclectic? You'll hear performances by
Bruce Cockburn, Dolly Parton, Walter Ostanek, Lennie Gallant
and even the Prime Minister of the Blues...Dutch Mason. It
promises to be an exciting event for this special national
holiday! It all gets going at noon (12:30 NT) on CBC Radio
One.

5. ROUNDUP: ***last half-hour not heard in Toronto***

Join host Andy Lung for "My First Year" on the Roundup
today. Andy moved with his family from Hong Kong to Canada
exactly twenty years ago today. He and other immigrants to
Canada will recall the triumphs and tragedies of their first
year in this country, along with music created by those
who've come here from other countries. My First Year, this
afternoon on the Roundup at 2 (2:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.

7. BETWEEN THE COVERS: *** heard only in Hour One of
Richardson's Roundup today***

"Parvana's Journey" continues today on Between the Covers.
Deborah Ellis' novel follows a young girl's search for her
family in war-ravaged Afghanistan. Parvana has dressed as a
boy in order to travel safely - but safety is just a hope
under the circumstances. That's on Between the Covers, in
Hour One of Richardson's Roundup, which begins at 2 (2:30
NT) on CBC Radio One.

8. CANADA DAY CONCERT LIVE FROM THE STEVESTON SALMON
FESTIVAL:

Once a year, the charming BC village of Steveston shuts down
its main drag to host a Canada Day party where thousands
gather to eat barbecued wild salmon and to listen to great
music. On Canada Day, join CBC Radio host Rick Cluff and
co-host Margaret Gallagher as they reflect on Steveston's
colourful history through salmon-coloured glasses. You'll
also enjoy the compelling drumming of Uzume Taiko, the
poignant songwriting of Tim Readman, and the feel-good,
rootsy beat of Cleia. Catch it all, Canada Day at 4 p.m.
(4:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.

9. CONNECTIONS:

Emma McCune was a young British aid worker who went to Sudan
to help. Instead she lost her heart to a warlord and joined
his cause. The locals blamed her for a war that claimed
thousands of lives. Now Hollywood is stepping in and will
paint another picture. Was she a heroine or failure?
"Crossing the Line: The Story of Emma McCune," tonight on
Connections, with host Mary Ambrose, at 7:30 (8 NT) on CBC
Radio One.

10. MERCI MONTREAL: ***shared event with CBC Television***

Join Shelagh Rogers this evening for Merci Montreal, a
Canada Day concert live from that lovely and cosmopolitan
city. Jann Arden and Nanette Workman host on stage,
welcoming Fefe Dobson, Wilfred LeBouthillier, Quartetto
Gelato, Susie Arioli, and Ariane Moffatt. Merci Montreal,
tonight at 9 p.m. (10 AT, 10:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.

11. IDEAS: ***pre-empted by Canada Day special***

12. THE ARTS TODAY:

Looking back at a CanLit classic this evening on The Arts
Today: three younger writers join Peter Tiefenbach to
discuss Margaret Atwood's "Survival," thirty years on.
That's The Arts Today, right after the ten p.m. news (10:30
NT) on CBC Radio One.

13. NORTHERN LIGHTS:

Tune in to Northern Lights tonight for wall-to-wall
Canadians. Don't miss fiddler Oliver Schroer and his Ode to
Canada, accordionist Danielle Martineau, Symphony Nova
Scotia, the Gryphon Trio, Quartetto Gelato and much more.
That's Northern Lights, with host Andrea Ratuski, at 11:00

CBC Radio Two.

unique history of Canada, to the accompaniment of
traditional and original Canadian music. That's In

on CBC Radio Two.
