Last year I brought my 1960's vintage Shure M-68 Mike Mixer. I will be
there on Saturday to say hello, but plan to leave before the banquet. To
make things easier if anyone wants to meet me in the city tomorrow morning I
will be glad to loan it to you guys. I'll take it back on Satuday night
before I leave. Call me at 212-995-2637 or 917-647-8035 ASAP so we can
figure on a place to meet.
Baring that, here are the tech specs for connecting everything. Anyone who
has worked with Pro or Semi-Pro audio will know what to do, and probably
doesn't need this note. I'll list the requirements in reverse since the
connection to the P.A. system is the most critical.
The P.A. system only takes a low impedence, 3-wire balanced line via an
XLR-3 connector at standard dynamic microphone levels (-128dbm/150 ohm
reference, but that is the max sensitivity standard). The system doesn't
provide phantom power for condenser mikes. You will need to have a
conneting cable with a MALE XLR-3 connector on the mike end.
Unless your last mixer or interfaceing piece of audio equipment in your
chain of mixers has a mike level out, you cannot connect the other mixers to
the mike jack. Even if it has a mike level, it may be unbalanced and
require a matching transformer, like a Rat Shack 274-017 which has a
Standard phone plug in and an XLR male out.
Most of your Stereo DJ mixers have only unbalanced RCA jacks at 0db/1v rms @
10k, way too loud, and that gets worse when you "Y" connect the channels for
mono. Please don't think of lowering the ouput level of your mixer, you
will pick up power supply hum and any minor static abberations will cause
major surges into the P.A. system, plus no one will be able to make a
recording off your mixer, the volume will be too low. The best thing to do
is go to
Radio Shack, get some parts and build a pad around the transformer above.
Before they rebuilt the P.A. about 10 years ago we were able to connect
unbalanced audio equipment at the amps, but no provision was made during the
upgrade.
Your mixer in will also require a low impedence input XLR-3 mike jack in
order to use the hotel mike. If your mixer has a phone plug input, get a
Radio Scab 274-016 transformer to plug it in.
So does someon want to drop by and get the M68 and some spare cables and "Y"
connectors?

Can anyone lend a hand with audio mixing capability that would feed a
mic-level input in the hotel's PA system?
As you may know there are no input jacks built into the audio mixing panel
at the hotel. Last year Steve Colletti (I think) brought a mixing board
that had mic-level output which we then patched into the microphone jacks in
the wall.
Steve isn't joining us this year...does anyone else have similar equipment
they can bring along?
This would be particularly needed for the "Listening Lounge" segment.
Thanks
