Re: [IRCA] Sony SRF-M37L

Hi Karl (and Nick, Russ and Theo),

The unfortunate reality is that pocket radio loopsticks can be optimized for either the Medium Wave or Longwave frequencies, but not for both. Commercial manufacturers always choose to optimize the Medium Wave frequencies, since such performance is an important factor in a model's overall popularity.ÂAs such, any purchaser looking for good Longwave performance from the SRF-M37L is likely to be very disappointed.
Like Tecsun's Longwave "coverage" in the PL-310, PL-380, PL-606 and other models, the MW-optimized loopstick in the SRF-37L delivers clunker Longwave performance.

If you want good Longwave performance in a pocket radio you do have several options, however.ÂYou can either improve reception by inductively coupling a tuned gain booster (Longwave-optimized Q-Stick or FSL antenna, for example) or if you want to go all-out, you can replace the MW-optimized loopstick with a Longwave-optimized one (such asÂtransplantingÂa 7.5"ÂLW loopstick into a Tecsun DSP Ultralight model, as in the construction article posted at http://www.mediafire.com/download/845snah2h4ek9z9/7.5inLWLS.doc  Without trying one of these two approaches, however, you are pretty much out of luck looking for anything on Longwave on a stock pocket radioÂother than your local NDB beacon (when you are across the street from it).

Here's a link to Gary's 2015 reviews, after the C. Crane Skywave came
out last year:
