Re: [IRCA] 531-More FM (2 kW) in Alexandra, NZ Received at Rockwork 4

Thanks very much to Neil K. for hisÂgenerous comments on this reception, and thanks also to Theo D. for some amazing investigative work on an earlier "531-Australian" UnID MP3 (which turned out to be from NZ, and quite possibly an earlier logging of this new catch).
Chuck, I'm happy that you were also able to record More FM around the same time on 6-26. As for why the station peaked at different times for your broadband loop and my 15" FSL, it might be related to the entirely different design of the antennas, whichÂcould interact differently with the Rockwork cliff edgeÂto boostÂtransoceanic propagation. I had no reception of the Alexandra station at all at 1225, only a solid signal from Auckland. During the reception of 531-More FM's strong ID at 1230 I didn't entirely lose 531-PI's signal, but it was considerably weakened. If you listen closely to the MP3 there is an apparent 531-PI ID by a female-voiced speaker at exactly the same timeÂas the More FM ID, but too weakÂto make out any detail. More FM's signalÂstuck around for about 2 minutes afterÂthe ID withÂfairly strong music, then sunk underÂAuckland for the duration of the session.

Yes, I just opened the file for the first time and hear an ID at 1224 although oddly your 1230 ID was not heard - just a mumble or two. And your 1230 ID is definitely better than my 1224 ID.
Not a trace in that period of Australia nor Auckland - most, most unusual. You thought this might be an auroral effect but I wonder about that as Alexandra would be a bit more prone to auroral Âeffects being the southernmost of the bunch. If anything, Alexandra would have been weakened and Auckland should have had the advantage.

Suddenly the More FM signal rose up out of the noise to take over the 531 frequency for a clear ID at 1230, only to fall back into the noise under PI a couple of minutes later. Chuck was with me at the time, but I don't know if he recorded any of this. The 15" FSL which received 531-More FM was set up with an Ultralight radio to record remotely, so I had no idea that anything special had been received until last night, when two more hours of 531 recordings were finally reviewed (feeling a little like a Perseus-SDR DXer this morning).
