Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] D-KAZ ADDS from 5AM-6AM scan 062314

I'm fascinated reading about your mid-Summer results, which are very impressive. Can you describe the antenna you're using in more detail or point me towards a web link? I'd love to try to replicate it here.

Now these logs are more like what I'd expect to see with that antenna and QTH. Over the past few years, I've heard everything you list from here in IL except 580 and 590. KIDO and KQNT both have adequate patterns and power to make it here, but to my west 580 is mangled by WIBW and 590 destroyed by KXSP. I checked distances and your's are just under 1100 miles to those two stations and per my understanding of theory that can be a long single hop whereas when you add close to 300 miles more to make it here to me near Chicago a single low band hop is quite unlikely. But I am quite please to see that I have hope for KIDO and KQNT although neither was noted on a great early winter night about a decade ago when KVI was in under WNAX.

I'd have hoped to hear you say that you had a good enough back null on WMVP to NOT have to wait for it to fade out due to daylight to let in KOMO. CHECK THE LSS MAPS TO SEE IF THAT WAS A FACTOR IN THOSE BACK-SIDE STATIONS SHOWING UP. I DON'T THINK IT WAS ANTENNA NULL-DRIFT.

Hmm...KAPE off the back end makes me a bit concerned about high end back null depth but around sunrise and when there's only a couple stns coming in, things can still be heard even if they are nulled 30 dB. SEE PREVIOUS COMMENT

Considering CKWX was in, did you have any CKST (sports) mixing with WHO as often happens here in season? YOU KNOW...I NEVER THOT TO CHECK, GIVEN HOW W-H-O IS USUALLY A NIGHTLIGHT AROUND HERE. I'LL DO THAT.

Did you check X-band? KNTS (Spanish religious oriented and Spanish Christian mx) should've been in on 1680 for example. Maybe there was Disney on 1640 once Milwaukee dropped out? I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WITH X-BAND, BUT I'LL GO BACK AND CHECK

Your antenna is oriented NNW and that should give you a good chance at Alaska this fall assuming cx cooperate. But if I could pick a direction for this antenna from central MN is would be about WNW for western DX and I'd expect enough back nulls to still knock down stns along bearings from Chicago to Toronto/Montreal.

Calls on 1450 are KZZJ. 1590 KGFK is licensed to East G.F, MN now. THANKS

This is the stuff you chase down early morning, when it's still dark to your West and you can use that to advantage. The best example may be 1000, where we simply waited for WMVP Chicago to fade away in the daylight, and that let
in KOMO.

Astute citizens will note that some of these catches are serious surprises, in light of signals much closer to us here in North-Central Minnesota. But
there we are, thanks to the D-Kaz and in no small part to the great
resolution available in the Perseus SDR. (I missed a few of these on the
first pass and found them only after going back and scanning verrry
carefully.)

Note the stations coming in from the South (the "backside" of the D-Kaz). The front-back nulling had been done the previous afternoon and the f/b null may have drifted...but it's more likely that CX were such that these signals
simply were warm enuf to make it in.
