Sounds like you need to check for corrosion on the plug and jack for the external power. I'd also consider replacing the two AA batteries and at the same time cleaning the terminals. Either of both of those should help.

Right now the main problem is it
won't come on when I flip the "ON" switch. Instead, I get an
"ERROR 3" message. Also, it will not work with the AC
adapter ... only internal batteries. That is usually not a
problem since I prefer batteries most of the time anyway.
