Re: [IRCA] Top Ten TP Signals from the Rockwork 4 Ocean Cliff DXpedition

Hi Guy,

Thanks for your comments!

<<< I was comparing the times of your loggings with the times Chuck and I were
DXing at Rockworks. It appears that all of your DU catches were made
significantly earlier than when we started DXing (~1230-1245 UTC), but the
TPs do coincide with our time frame (1245-1400 UTC). >>>

Well, it seems like all three of us (you, me and Chuck) were getting a few weak DU's during the 1245-1400 UTC time frame, but my impression was that these signals were pretty pathetic (maybe because I've been spoiled by the huge Kiwi signals at that same cliff, in July and August?). On the very first morning I made a lucky logging of 531-PI at an S9 level at 1115 UTC, so as much as I hated the idea of spending almost all night on that frigid cliff chasing DU's, the solution for better results seemed to be an earlier start time. That definitely proved to be the major factor in finding more New Zealand signals during the dicey April propagation.

<<< I was wondering if you noticed any noise on the band from Rockworks 4,
because I noted some RFI here and there. I suspect it was coming from the
electronics of the temporary stop light on Hwy. 101 immediately to the
south, where a construction crew is working on the rock wall at the cliff
edge. When I DXed at this spot in November, it was dead quiet, with zero
RFI or QRM to be heard. >>>

Yes, that construction crew was still doing their road work about 300 feet to the east of Rockwork 4 during my April 9-11 DXpedition, but to be honest, I didn't notice any additional RF noise at the site related to their road signs or equipment. Of course the noise floor of Ultralight radios is nowhere near as favorable as that of the Perseus-SDR, so maybe there was indeed some additional RF pollution, but my Ultralight radio simply made it sound like part of its normal operation? :-) To be honest, the Ultralight radios would be pretty dead in the water without the sensitive FSL antennas in all-out transoceanic DXing like this, and fortunately the FSL antennas can completely null out any type of RF pollution which is off the ends of the ferrite rods (as any RF noise from that road crew's equipment would have been, in the Rockwork 4 FSL antenna setup).

Hi Gary,

Your recordings are great! Thanks for sharing some of your "vibrant"
results.

I was comparing the times of your loggings with the times Chuck and I were
DXing at Rockworks. It appears that all of your DU catches were made
significantly earlier than when we started DXing (~1230-1245 UTC), but the

I was wondering if you noticed any noise on the band from Rockworks 4,
because I noted some RFI here and there. I suspect it was coming from the
electronics of the temporary stop light on Hwy. 101 immediately to the
south, where a construction crew is working on the rock wall at the cliff
edge. When I DXed at this spot in November, it was dead quiet, with zero
