This was a very interesting morning for TPs. Until about 1515, the
Asian signals were deader than a flat possum on the interstate. Then the
upper part of the dial came to life in a big way, with carriers on most
of the 9 kHz channels above 1200 kHz, and audio on many of them. Below
1200, the TP DX continued to resemble the aforementioned possum.
The opening was quite lively for about a half hour, and was
geographically-limited as well: mainly Japan, with a couple of things
from Korea and northeastern China. The highlight was hearing JOWF
dominating 1440, which doesn't happen too often around here. I was also
tantalized by weak, splatter-infested audio on channels like 1467 and
1494, as well as carriers on 1269, 1449, 1485, 1512, and 1584.
Good - Most of it understandable by a native speaker for at least a
brief period
1287 JOHR, 1523-1540 JJ discussion good on peaks but sometimes faded
into the splatter
1440 JOWF, animated Japanese woman overpowering the domestics 1530
1566 HLAZ, two Chinese women talking and occasionally laughing 1531
Fair - Some of it understandable by a native speaker
1314 JOUF, JJ talk & short bits of music, sounded like a series of
ads 1529
1503 JOUK, Men in Japanese fading in & out 1531-35, sounded like
phone interview
Poor - Interesting bits of stuff in the noise and splatter
1323 Woman talking in what sounded like Russian 1536, which would
make it CRI. Good carrier but shallow modulation.
1386 NHK, woman very poor //1602 1531, amid KRKO IBOC QRM
1413 Weak male talk 1534
1422 JORF, weak JJ talk 1531 in 1420 splatter
1467 What sounded like woman talking 1532, way too much KGAA-1460
splatter to tell anything further
1476 weak music 1533 in heavy domestic splatter
1494 JJ talk fading above the noise at times 1526-1534
1575 Weak music, possibly nonstop, sounding like US pop music
1526-1540+, maybe occasional short anmts consistent with DJ talking
between songs. AFN most likely but way too weak to say for sure. No
sign of normal VOA programming.
1593 Occasional syllables poking through the splatter from
"Freedom-1590" 1528. Not sure if it was China or Japan.
1602 NHK2, woman in Japanese 1529
