Conditions were a bit of a let down today, after the spectacular
Japanese reception yesterday. Most stations were weaker than
yesterday, and peaked for short periods of time. The most notable
exception was HLAZ, which was consistently good-strong.
Nonetheless, there were a few bright spots. AFN-1575 was back for the
second day in a row, this time with no sign of VOA. Alaskans were back,
too, with KNOM-780 deserving some sort of award for musical variety (see
below).
Good - understandable by a native speaker, for at least a minute or so
747 JOIB, CC lessons 1348
750 KFQD, jingle ID and CBS news dominant
890 KBBI, 1402 good after CJDC fadeout, woman w/marine weather for S
Central Alaska
972 KBS, briefly good 1355 with 2 women talking, then lively song.
Otherwise, subpar today
1287 JOHR, conversation in JJ 1403-08, was nil-fair before 1403 and
gradually faded after 1408
1566 HLAZ, strongest TP today 1255-1345 in JJ, and the only one
consistently good during the entire time I recorded. A bit weaker but
still OK after antenna change and start of CC pgm 1345
Fair - parts of it understandable by a native speaker
594 JOAK, not very good today, JJ man & woman 1353-56, otherwise just
weak bits of talk here and there
693 JOAB, CC lessons 1335
774 JOUB, local ID & start of EE lesson 1320
780 KNOM, mostly o/KKOH w/"Hang On Sloopy" - McCoys 1321, then a
Bible story, 1325 man said "unofficially 37 degrees in Nome" followed by
native chant w/drum accompaniment, then a 1950's country song by Gene
Autry or someone similar. At 1330, a song from the 90's I couldn't
quite place. A really interesting break from the boring radio we have
in the lower 48!
1422 JORF, JJ talk 1406
1440 JOWF, JJ talk mixing w/domestics 1400, not nearly as impressive
as yesterday
1575 AFN, mostly poor 1400 w/news in American EE, 1403 "...AP Radio
News" mentioned, 1404 news story about yesterday's Broncos-Cowboys
game. All alone today, no sign of VOA.
1602 NHK time pips 1400 weak, better 1403 w/JJ talk, possibly a
language lesson
Poor - incomprehensible
567 JOIK, JJ talk in 570 splatter 1318
828 JOBB, weather report in JJ 1317
981 bits of talk in CKNW splatter 1332
1053 jammer
1242 tone at ToH and bits of talk 1400, better by 1403 w/man in JJ
1503 JOUK, time pips and JJ talk 1400
Bruce in Seattle
Winradio Excalibur
K9AY antenna
