Tim,

For what it worth, at my place, it is too early in the season to hear Syria.
Mauritania is just dominant these days on 783 and the same goes for some North African stations.

Tim, Perhaps another tactic is called for, such as DFing. 
         Nouakchott is about as far west as you can go in Africa, and
         Damascus is beyond east, in fact about 45 degrees apart by the
         Great Circles, 90 vs 45 degrees or so from K`zoo.
