Maybe. And maybe not.

For the many of us who are using web-based email, and still get it hijacked, anti-virus software doesn't even come into play. In the case where one of mine was hit and sent junk to another list, that's what it was - all web-based, despite a hardware firewall, a software firewall and 3 different anti-malware programs actively running. None of that mattered because everything took place on the web - my account got hijacked.
