A shortwave DXer, Bill Roemer, from Bowling Green, Kentucky, was well-known for his relay of messages from WW II POWs to their families in America. He was a member of, at least, the Universal Radio DX Club. You could try to make contact with Jerry Berg, who has collected a great amount of SWBC DX historical material. (aka Jerome S. Berg.) I Googled Bill Roemer, Bowling Green, Kentucky ... and one of the first hits was a story in the Bowling Green newspaper on David Roemer, a 48-year-old Bowling Green firefighter, who began his birdwatching hobby on his grandfather, Bill Roemer's farm. Perhaps he might be aware of the family lore, etc.
