Hi Bruce (and Nick),
Thanks very much for your detailed, expert advice on each one of these
DU station mysteries (and thanks also to Nick for his additional
information on the possibility of the 1017 kHz station being Radio
Sport).
As a result of Nick's detailed investigation of the 1017-Radio Sport
programming (much appreciated) and confirmation of the interview being
broadcast at the time, the evidence would certainly seem to fall in
that direction. Thank you both very much for your assistance in solving
these DU station mysteries, and your inputs will be very helpful in
drafting the final DXpedition report.
As for the 1701 kHz Australian HPONS station, there is another one of
these bizarre cliff-top DXpeditions planned for the Cannon Beach (OR)
area next month...during which that frequency (and all of the other
Aussie X-band ones) will be high priority targets!
73 and Thanks, Gary

Hi Gary
See below for my comments:

Hello All,
As usual during an ocean coast DXpedition, several frequencies turned
up with Unidentified or mystery stations during the recent Oregon
Cliff
trip. Any advice or suggestions on the following MP3's (recorded on
the
Cape Perpetua cliff with a 7.5" loopstick PL-380 Ultralight and 8" FSL
antenna) would be greatly appreciated!
855 kHz: Two different DU stations were apparently received on this
frequency. This first recording (during favorable Australian
propagation on July 18th) was almost certainly one of the 10 kW ABC
stations on the
frequency:

I agree. The style of announcing is very typical of ABC programs.
This second recording, however, was made during New Zealand-slanted
propagation on July 20th, and I suspect that it is the 2 kW NZ Rhema
station playing Christian music (the only kind of music that the
station plays). If anyone can confirm that this is indeed a Christian
music song, it would help in the indentification process:

It's definitely a Christian hymn. I recognize the melody but I can't
recall the name of it right now.
927 kHz: Can anyone confirm that Radio Fiji One has already left this
frequency? This recording certainly sounds like them, although it's
possible that one of the two 5 kW Australian stations could have been
playing this Island-type music. It certainly doesn't sound like
Newstalk ZB (the 558 kHz Rafio Fiji One // was unavailable at the
time)
http://www.mediafire.com/?dvggy0mw5j114sw
I'm guessing it's 4CC. The station's website says they play rock music
all evening and overnight, and the music you have here would fit. The
other Aussie has a Sportstalk format, so probably not them or Newstalk
ZB.
1017 kHz: This station was received on July 18th during favorable
Australian propagation and is believed to be 2KY (received during a
previous Dxpedition) although the lack of horse racing info was
puzzling. The 2.5 kW Radio Sport station in New Zealand is an outside
possibility:
http://www.mediafire.com/?w9pvb9jrpng0c17
It sounds like a phone interview, but I could only make out a few words
here and there. Probably 2KY, maybe Radio Sport. It was late enough
in
the day that the horse racing probably had ended for the night.
1503 kHz: This mix of two sports-oriented stations recorded on July
19th is almost certainly the 5 kW Radio Sport New Zealand station and
one of the 5 kW Australians, but I have no idea which one is in the
mix:
http://www.mediafire.com/?4d3742c6v841l32
Sounds like a couple of hip young dudes talking on the phone. I'm not
convinced the language is English. Maybe 3KND Melbourne, which is 100%
Aboriginal programming, though the website doesn't say whether they use
indigenous languages or just English. I only hear one station in this
clip.
1701 kHz: Very low powered Australian HPONS station (400 watts)
produced a shaky signal on July 20th. An ID of sorts pops out of the
noise at 22 seconds into the recording, with a male-voiced announcer
saying something like "You're listening to J.R. (something mumbled),
the Christian way." Confirmation of these station's identities may be
tricky, according to the WRTH (a classic understatement, it seems :-)
http://www.mediafire.com/?el2l4z8pr2qdoo6
I hear "the Christian Way" mentioned, but not much else. The
preacher
has an interesting accent. He sounds African.
Thanks very much again for any assistance!
73 and Good DX,
