As most MW DXers know there aren't a lot of stations on 720 kHz. One I have
wanted for a while is KFIR in Sweet Home, Oregon, about 450 miles from
my QTH.
At night KDWN in Las Vegas, NV dominates the frequency with their 50 KW
power,
day and night. I decided to try for KFIR in the time after sunrise in
Las Vegas
and just after KFIR switched from their puny night power of 184 watts to
their
day power of 10 KW.
Finally this morning about 0530 local time here in the SF bay area KFIR must
have shifted to their 10 KW day power and I got reasonably good KFIR
reception for
about 15 minutes before propagation faded out. Daytime reception of KFIR
isn't
normally possible at this 450 mile distance.
Finally logged it using my Excalibur SDR and Quantum Phaser with two random
wires. Thank goodness for the grey-line effect!
