Re: [IRCA] NF ULR TA DX
TA's are practically locals in Newfoundland. I used Jean's wife's car there
one day, a very unselective radio with 10 kHz channels, and the TA's were
showing up way wide of their designated 9 Khz channel long before sundown.
A bad radio, maybe even your dental work, will get you the usual powerhouse
TA signals and a pile of Iberians. Allen is diligent enough to get much
more. Now that he's out of St. John's he has a little more room to play
with antennas. But very interesting to see all of his reports from when he
was in St. John's, DXing from Marconi's spot after a brisk walk and ascent
to Signal Hill. And keep in mind people like Robert Ross have snagged 1000
stations using an ULR. I think some of its specs rival the old boat
anchors, if not improve them.
One beautiful thing about Newfoundland is that all of the northeastern 50 kW
stations that normally plague us DXers in the northeast are a long way away,
so there is a lot less local interference to get in the way of the rare
stuff, and with beverages, longwires, phasing units it is possible to beat
them back completely.

Subject: Re: [IRCA] NF ULR TA DX
I'm amazed at Alan Willie's TA DX list of snags with an otherwise not so
sensitive little pocket radio and also a little envious since I'm not even
getting any TPs with a fairly good full sized portable but then he's much
closer to his TAs than I am to my TPs. But anyway whenever he sends in a
report it always mentions the ultralights. I'd like to see what the results
would be if he used a big rig with adjustable RF gain etc.and something like
a loop antenna. Can we persuade him to do some DXing with something a little
more sensitive -weather permitting ? Bill in BC
