Hello Steve (and all),
Thanks for the DU report from NE Oregon this morning, Steve.
After a miserable morning yesterday for both weather and propagation
here in Lincoln City, things turned around completely today. Both the
LW and MW bands had a major turnaround, and DU's from the Pacific
Islands were very vibrant from 1200-1300. One of the major "loose ends"
from last year's DXpeditions was taken care of on 666 kHz at 1220, with
a French YL's voice paralleled with 738-Tahiti for the first Ultralight
logging of New Caledonia. Noumea was the strongest I've ever heard it
(with a stock Tecsun PL-380 and the new 8" diameter Ferrite Sleeve Loop
antenna), and several other Pacific Island regulars were also booming
in (567-2YC, 738-Tahiti, 891-5AN, etc.). From here on the Oregon beach
the propagation seemed slanted toward New Zealand and the smaller
islands, with 603-Waatea showing up again with soft music around 1210,
like last year. The Australians were there, but not especially vibrant.
A new Longwave-optimized 6.5" diameter FSL also proved its worth, with
279-Radio Rossii almost maxing out the PL-380's S/N display at 24. The
same antenna tracked down many low-powered NDB's from Alaska and Hawaii
this morning, as the memory of yesterday's propagation meltdown was
completely erased. Walt mentioned that he didn't hear a single DU in
Masset yesterday morning, either, so I guess the South Pacific
propagation was dreary all over!

Since Gary DeBock is in Lincoln City listening at the beach this week,
I
checked for AMBC signals this morning--it's that time of year again and
some
DUs heard. Lots of hets with some audio caught.
738 Tahiti poor/weak, clear French talk 1205 utc; 855 poor Australia;
891
Australia peaking weak/medium 1227 utc with old-time male vocal "Make
Someone Happy"; 1107 Australia poor; 1116 Australia poor/weak.
Everything
gone but poor hets after 1230 utc.
1710 very poor with off-frequency 1709.934 occasional audio, not the
Puget
Sound Russian religious station which is mostly on-frequency.
LWBC Radio Rossii 180, 279 both weak 1132 utc.
