Not really surprised given the poor ground conductivity in that area.
My wife and I, a couple of years back, spent 2 days in nearby Cleveland 
and, from tuning the AM dial, you would have hardly known that Chattanooga 
was a short drive via i-75.
Turning to the fm dial, on the other hand, you knew where you were.
Still, it is sad that this longtime station is no more though, if the 
frequency has any value, someone else in the area may go after it to 
relocate their own operation.
