Hi Walt,
Thanks for your comments on the new PL-606 review, and thanks also for your
detailed DXing reports from Kauai using the 7.5" loopstick E100 model.
In answer to your question, all modified Ultralight radios having a 7.5"
loopstick are significantly more sensitive on both AM and LW than any stock
pocket radio, to the extent that DXing results on either band are greatly
enhanced. A stock PL-606 model would have 1 kHz DSP filtering roughly
equivalent to the Murata CFJ455K5 filter installed in your E100, but the PL-606
loopstick's AM performance would fall far short of your current capability.
Shortly before his unfortunate accident, John Bryant and I both
experimented with "Slider E100" models such as yours, and discovered that we could
improve received audio on DX stations by off-tuning 1 kHz up or down from the
fundamental frequencies of the DX station (whichever way was farther from
domestic splatter). This provided clearer high-frequency audio from DX
stations for MP3 recordings, without much reduction in the DX station's signal
strength.
Of course, the new Tecsun 1 kHz DSP Ultralight radios (PL-310 and PL-380)
have also been popular platforms for 7.5" loopstick transplants, especially
the PL-380 model. Several 7.5" loopstick PL-380 models have been sent out
from here for noted DXers (Mark, Saul and Rob), and I have an extra model
here if you'd like to try one out. In comparison to your "Slider E100," the
7.5" loopstick PL-380 model offers equivalent AM-DXing performance without
the need to slide a coil, although the difference in received DX audio
(between the 1 kHz DSP filtering and the Murata ceramic filter) leads some
DXers to say that the Murata filter models (like yours) have a somewhat more
"mellow" tone.

Yes, thanks Gary! Sitting here on the lanai in Kauai with the highly
modified Eton e100 (thanks, Gary!), I couldn't help but think whether the 606
might be a better traveller and easier to use than the Eton. Of course the
external large ferrite rod does elicit some interest passing through
security, and I'm worried about it's fragility (might it shatter easily if the
bag was dropped for instance?). Also with the tight ceramic filter, the
audio is rather muddy and not entiirely pleasant to listen to. Comments?

Thanks Gary. You once again did an excellent review.
I've been using a PL-606 for about a fortnight and found it an excellent
ultralight receiver. It has excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Before TP
propagation went downhill, I was able to hear signals from Japan on the
barefoot PL-606.

Hello All,
For those interested in the latest technological advances in AM-DXing
portables, a full 6-page review of the newest Ultralight radio sensation
(the
compact PL-606 AM-FM-SW-LW receiver) has been uploaded to DXer.Ca (at

Detailing Tecsun's successful effort to combine the class-leading 100 mm
loopstick (of the PL-310 model) with 1 kHz DSP selectivity in a very small
cabinet, the article includes many photos, information on PL-606 quirks and
advantages, and the results of a four-band competitive performance test
against the PL-380 and PL-310 models. At $39.95 (plus $20.00 shipping from
Hong
Kong), this breakthrough Ultralight model may well be the best combination
yet of AM sensitivity, selectivity and portability.
