Hello All,
This morning's TP propagation followed a strange pattern here, with Bruce's
description being fairly accurate. Rather than the general downturn that
Dennis and Richard (on Ultralightdx) reported, there was a drop off in
Japanese audio, seemingly replaced by stronger audio from Russia. Several
Chinese stations on both the lower and middle band were also at decent levels,
although other common Chinese never made it past the carrier level.
The best example of this Russian-slanted propagation was on 666 kHz, where
a vibrant Radio Mayak was holding down the frequency at 1335 all alone,
with no trace of JOBK . Radio Mayak was an occasional visitor under JOBK here
last season, but never alone, and never at this good signal level. 648-VOR
also got a boost from this Russian propagation, and even the Radio Mayak
synchros on 576 kHz were making a valiant effort to get through heavy
splatter from a semi-local on 570. 657-Pyongyang again had competition from the
relatively sane Chinese station (presumed Henan), which unfortunately did
not push NK off the frequency like last week. The Japanese were relatively
anemic, with only 594 and 828 producing much audio here this morning. Chinese
middle-band stations on 1035, 1044, 1053 and 1116 had decent signal
levels, with 1044's CRI all alone during its Japanese program this morning,
having no trace of the strong Korean co-channel noted yesterday. It was another
interesting September morning, from a new TP season that seems better than
most of us expected.
The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider model (7.5" loopstick)
inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC tuned passive loop (in the rainy back
yard):
576 R. Mayak (Presumed, many stations in Russia) Occasional bits of
Russian-sounding audio breaking through heavy KVI splatter
594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan Fair to good signals occasionally, 1315-1330
603 TP-Mix Fair to good mix of HLSA pop music and Chinese speech
639 CNR1 (Many stations in China) Good strength Chinese talk, 1338
648 VOR Razdolnoye, Russia Vibrant Russian disco music through
some splatter at 1344

657 TP-Mix Pyongyang BS (and its obsolete programming) unfortunately
dominant over UnID Chinese speech and music (Henan?)
666 R. Mayak Good signals; all alone on frequency at 1335 with Russian
speech. No trace of JOBK

675 VOV Hanoi, Vietnam Fair-good Vietnamese news at 1346; in and out
684 UnID A threshold audio signal at 1345 was here (presumed China)
738 BEL2 Penghu, Taiwan Chinese pop music program down in strength
747 JOIB Sapporo, Japan Barely audible in heavy KXL splatter, 1322
774 JOUB Akita, Japan Weakened signals no match for KTTH splatter
828 JOBB Osaka, Japan Fair signals on this clear frequency, but with
UnID Chinese underneath
936 China (presumed) Weak threshold audio in and out all morning
972 HLCA Dangjin, S. Korea Weak-poor Korean pop music at 1351
1035 CNR1 (China) Fair-good Chinese speech and music, 1340-1350
1044 CRI Jiangsu, China Good strength Japanese language program at
1344; no trace of yesterday's Korean co-channel
1053 UnID Chinese Fighting the Jammer with strong restaurant music,
and winning the frequency battle half of the time this morning
1053 Korean Jammer Seems to losing the formidable signals of early Sept.
1116 China (presumed) Fair Chinese audio at 1354 on this unusual freq.
1134 TP-Mix Much weaker than usual this morning with an anemic JOQR
usually under a slightly less anemic KBS
1566 HLAZ Jeju, S. Korea Fair signals with Japanese program, 1313
1575 VOA Ban Rassom, Thailand Barely there w/ Asiatic language, 1309
73 and Good DX,
Gary DeBock
