Re: [IRCA] MORE BAD NEWS FOR FM DXERS

T-80 for $10 at a Thrift Shop? I am "majorlly" jealous! :) That is a
nice one for FM DX'ing! I troll some of the local Goodwill's and the
only Tuner's that I have ever seen are very low end (although some brand
names -just not DX material). You know you have a low end one, as there
aren't as many controls (such as FM mute and bandwidth type controls) :)
Although the bandwidth is selectable on yours, many w/ T-80's and T-85's
replace their filters (150 KHz ones IIRC) with 110 KHz Muratra's.

You may also want to check thrift stores for HD radios, such as the Sony
or Accurian. I found an Accurian HD radio, less remote for $6. I think
that someone couldn't figure it out or didn't know what it was and
donated it. I picked up a Texas station, via Sporadic E (aka Es) and it
was in HD, on simple rabbit ears in 2008 and a few Floridians and New
England / Maritime stations last FM DX Es season.

Enjoy your find!

Dave in Indy

I am in the middle of Seattle, but until today haven't had a chance to
really hear what the FM IBOC hash sounds like. By chance, I picked up a
Yamaha T-80 tuner today at a thrift shop for $10, and it works
perfectly!
The AM section has dual bandwidths, but neither are very narrow, and the
images on the low end of the band are pretty bad, so no TPs on this one.

However, the FM side is fantastically sensitive and has two good
bandwidths. In listening to local IBOCers, doing an A/B with the
wide/narrow filtering, the hash is quite noticeable, especially on the
local classical station that isn't blasting all of the time.
Fortunately,
the narrow bandwidth pretty much gets rid of it, and the audio isn't
impacted much at all.

I can't imagine what those who listen to the classical station, and
don't
have a selectable bandwidth tuner or an HD tuner, must think.
