[IRCA] TP for 31 Oct from Victoria, BC

Hmm, in spite of Nigel's and Bruce's comments, this morning in Victoria was a large improvement on yesterday, thought part of the quantity of loggings was due to spending more time at it. Hope the guys at Grayland had similar conditions.

One caveat, the strongest signals were heard between 1250 and 1330UT (maybe peaking about 1320), and signal strengths tapered off after that point, with no obvious sunrise enhancement. In addition, after 1330, the decline in signals was most noticeable in the upper band, which had shown some signs of liveliness previously. Finally, 603 kHz and below was a bit of a gold mine of good signals this morning, though nothing new logged. (also ran the SDR-14 earlier, and found Mayak chimes on 666//576 at 0959, mystery chimes on 603 at 0959 and 1359, which I'm suspecting is KBS2, and 720 had CC pips at 1200UT mixing w/KDWN.

(I'm modifying the signal strength ratings to add Bruce's clarifications)

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least briefly):

279 R. Rossii at 1318UT
531 JOQG //594 at 1319UT (!)
558 HLQH //603 at 1356; 603 much poorer at this time
567 JOIK //594 at1402
594 JOAK , mostly owning the channel
603 HLSA at 1447 //558, w/mx underneath
657 N. Korea at 1317 along with big hum
747 JOIB
774 JOUB
828 JOBB
972 HLCA

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a native speaker,
though often battling w/splash or noise):

189 R. Rossii
873 JOGB trading places w/N. Korea
945 CNR-1 //5030, but only briefly
963 CRI w/RR talk
1017 CRI //5965; but later there was pop mx not //6145 or 747, so not sure who it was
1134 KBS //972
1251 CC talk (VoR? but no parallels available)
1287 JOHR
1566 HLAZ
1575 VoA

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be understood by a native speaker

153 and 234 R. Rossii
549 Mayak at 1431, woman in RR //576
576 Mayak
621 CC talk, but not as strong or frequent as recently
639 CNR-1 //5030
666 Mayak w/RR talk //576, but also JOBK //594 at times
711 at 1411UT, likely HLKA
792 a bit of a mess mostly, but pop mx fairly clear at 1422UT
855 strong hum messing up the audio
918 CC, but no echo noted today
936 unknown at 1322 and 1406; this had a strong carrier much of the morning, but audio less than I would have expected
981 CNR-1 //5030
1206 likely Yanbian, w/growl on audio; best while 1200 was on OC (ahhh...)
1377 CNR-1 //5030
1475 Malaysia at 1318

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

180
585 //594 at 1451 so JOPG
648 man talking 1444UT
675
702 hum and maybe NHK-1 per parallel
738 a mess
756 usually a mess; China / Korea?
801
819 seemed //2850 at 1443, so N. Korea
837 seemed //594? so NHK-1
1008
1143
1197 good carrier, touches of mx at 1340UT (while 1200 running OC)
1503 seemed //594 at 1459 so JOUK
1593 seemed //5030 so CNR-1

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

864, most others, eventually dug out some audio

best wishes,

Nick
