[IRCA] TP for 20 Oct from Victoria, BC
Oh my, that was a bit of a ride....
Started listening around 1320, and all the regulars were in, but there was plenty of splatter as well. About 1405 things started to liven up slowly, and by 1420 some of the second tier stations were dropping serious field strength into the neighborhood. It still seemed a splattery morning however, so it was hard to ID the weaker stuff; on top of that, the weaker stuff tended to be Chinese with no obvious parallels, so were pretty much unIDable anyway. Also, although there were a lot of contenders in the "darn good audio" category, the regulars (NHK porkers, and 972) were really no better than other mornings, and at times 594 would fade under a couple of co-channel stations. In fact, I don't actually recall hearing 747 rise seriously above the splatter at any point, but I could have missed it.
pretty darn good audio (at least briefly, though mostly pretty steady):
279 R. Rosii
567 JOIK //594
594 JOAK
639 CNR-1 at 1420 better than //5030
666 JOBK //594 briefly at 1345
738 quiet mx at 1433, seemed to be Taiwan, as IDd later w/parallel to 1143
774 JOUB
828 JOBB (something under it as well, but not ID'd)
936 mostly mx, some CC talk 1429UT; presumed Anhui
963 CRI in RR at 1431.
972 HLCA
1134 KBS //972 (this was strong, but so was the CKWX splatter)
1593 CNR-1 at 1449UT
reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash or noise):
189 R. Rossii; very clear, but weaker than 279 above
531 JOQG //594 but not this strength until 1431UT
558 JOCR was dominant when I checked, which HLQH under
603 two stations at least. HLQH dominant at time it was this strong, per 558 //
621 CC talk at 1427UT
657 KK talk and hum
675 presumed Vietnam, didn't get this strong until 1433
711 HLKA w/KK talk along with bubble jammer
747 JOIB (really)
873 JOGB //828 at least earlier
918 woman in CC with wonderful echo; something else there also
1017 CRI w/ chimes and fanfare on hour
1143 Taiwan Fisheries w/mx //738 at 1442UT
1161 oriental singing at 1425; Taiwan?
1170 CC talk dominating; likely VoA
1206 big hum and KK talk; 1411UT
1287 JOHR, but not until later
1566 HLAZ, never made it to the top tier
not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:
153 R. Rossii
594 two stations battling w/JOAK at 1412, sometimes overpowering it (or more JOAK became underpowered at that point); looked for Vietnam parallel, but 675 wasn't really there and 5975 wasn't //
612 JOLK //594 at 1428 o/u something else
792 western sounding ballad at 1408; no idea
945 CNR1
1044 CRI in JJ, fanfare on hour
1188 mix of NHK1 and presumed HLKX
1242 presumed JOLF w/mx
1251 could have been VoR, but not up to its carrier strength; someone off channel as well (if not this)
1278 CC talk
1305 KK talk, so HLSV
1422 presumed JORF w/mx
1503 JOUK //594 at 1444
Burbles in the splatter and noise:
801 hum dominating signal mess, some CC in there?
837 NHK1 //594, but a general mess of signals and IBOC
1008 rumble (jammer?) dominant, 2 station under it
1035 hum, strong carrier, mess of signals
1053 JJ? talk u/strong carrier
1089 CC?
1314 usual hum w/possible JOUF mixed in
1476 no idea; couldn't get // w/NHK2, perhaps China or Philippines more likely anyway; talk was too weak for ID'ing language
1557 mx at 1452; haven't heard much from WYFR this season
1584 hum burying audio (s)
Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):
576, 846, 891 (too much CKMO-900), 1152, 1215 (w/hum)
best wishes,
Nick
