Dave,
Pre-amps are often used to boost antenna input.  A good one is made by DX
Engineering, the RPA-1.  I use it occasionally.  There are many designs
posted on the net for diy adventures.  However, some designs are better than
others as far as noise making.  If you live in an electrically noisy area, a
pre-amp will also amplify the background noise so the benefit is limited.
