[IRCA] 8-9 Grayland Ultralight DXpedition-- New Zealand Booms In

Hello Guys,

Several MP3's from the August 9th Grayland (WA) DXpedition have been
uploaded to the sound file site on the Yahoo Ultralightdx site, and to the Sound
Bite section of _http://www.dxer.ca_ (http://www.dxer.ca) .

With extremely strong propagation to New Zealand and Tahiti, MP3's of
648-NZ Rhema (Gisbourne, NZ), 675-3YA (Christchurch, NZ) and 738-Radio Tahiti
were recorded, using both a new Kchibo D96L DSP-enhanced ULR, and a C.Crane
SWP 7.5" Slider model. The radios were greatly assisted by a 36" square
collapsible-frame tuned passive loop, which was designed and built in a crash
program shortly before the trip (since it was the largest antenna that
would fit inside a fully loaded Toyota Corolla trunk, during a family vacation).

Also, for those interested in the newest selectivity champion in the ULR
class, a comparison MP3 of the Kchibo D96L's 1 kHz DSP performance relative
to the premium $50 Murata CFJ455K5 filter has been uploaded to the
Ultralightdx file site. Comparing the reception of 567-2YA (Wellington, NZ) in the
shadow of strong domestic KVI-570, the first 20 seconds of the MP3 were
recorded on the new stock D96L, while the second 20 seconds were recorded on
the C.Crane SWP Slider, with the transplanted CFJ455K5 filter. To equalize
signal levels, both radios were assisted by the 36" passive loop. For those
of you desiring highly competitive selectivity performance in a stock $58
Ultralight radio, the result should be very encouraging!

A full report of the 8-9 Grayland DXpedition (and the multiple new Kiwi
loggings) should be finished shortly.
