4AY Ayr - 4VL Charleville
Australian AM Heritage Stations

Nearly 150 years of Australian radio heritage is now celebrated
on-line at www.radioheritage.net with the release of two new station
profiles in the popular Long Lost Australian Radio Stars series.

4AY Ayr and 4VL Charleville have served their local rural communities
for an accumulated 147 years, with 4AY celebrating 75 years on the
air on October 1 2009.

The Radio Heritage Foundation continues with its roll-out of heritage
profiles by adding these two Queensland AM stations to the growing
number already on-line at www.radioheritage.net.

4AY 'The Voice of the Canefields' began broadcasting in 1934, 'the
studios are two miles from Ayr in a spacious tree studded estate in
the richest area of the Burdekin River Delta'.

Two senior technicians [P. Sorensen and Don Guthrie] 'are in charge
of the handsome Phillips transmitter' which operates on a wavelength
of 309 metres [970 kilocycles].

'We're Air-Minded in the South West' heralds an art deco style logo
for 4VL Charleville which began broadcasting on February 12 1936.

Manager Walter G Exton 'was formerly associated with 2XN, 4AY and
4MB' whilst Pauline Fitzwalter has her session described as 'covering
the realms of recipes, helpful suggestions, fashion forecasts, prose
and verse'.

4VL's Sporting Commentator Val McNamara 'is a keen student of racing
and form' and you'll enjoy reading about these early radio
personalities and others who served listeners in Far North Queensland
and the South West, as well as more about the programs and heritage
