[IRCA] Redsun RF1201 AM-FM-SW Analog Ultralight Radio
Hello All,
The last contestant for the Ultralight Radio 2009 Shootout review finally
arrived from China, after an incredible 23 days by "air mail."
The Redsun RF1201 is another of the multiband analog portables designed for
the Chinese domestic market, featuring AM (525-1610 kHz stock, but
adjustable to cover up to 1700), FM (mono only), and ten SW bands from 3.55 to
22.9 Mhz. It features a tuning LED, and comes in an attractive gray cabinet--
all for $14.99 plus $10 shipping from the eBay seller "Tquchina."
The RF1201 is basically a copy of the higher quality Tecsun R9012, and the
tuning dial, round tuning knob and switch designs are all practically
identical. The circuit board components are also about the same, to the extent
that the R9012 alignment instructions posted on DXer.Ca will work also for
the RF1201. There are a couple of performance differences, however.
The RF1201, even when aligned, cannot quite match the sensitivity of the
Tecsun R9012, dropping off especially on the high AM band. The nulling
ability is slightly better than that of the R9012, however, giving this Redsun
model the best nulling ability of any Ultralight radio tested to date. It can
null out booming daytime semi-locals like KVI-570, KIRO-710 and KJR-950 to
a remarkable degree, putting them way down into the noise on their
fundamental frequencies. This particular capability may be of interest to urban
DXers desperate to escape the scourge of multiple local pests.
The long-delayed 2009 Shootout review will contain full details on this
and many other Ultralight radio models, and should be completed after an
upcoming major article describing PVC-framed passive loops is posted.
