[IRCA] 2009 Ultralight Radio Shootout-- Unprecedented Sensitivity in Two New Models
Hello Guys,
The live signal competition was completed today for the 2009 Ultralight
Radio AM-DX Shootout, with two of the new models (Tecsun PL-450 and the
C.Crane SWP) showing sensitivity exceeding that of any other previously tested
Ultralight radio.
Recently approved by the Ultralight Definitions Committee, the Tecsun
PL-450 is a new technological marvel with the latest in innovative features--
from the manufacturer of the discontinued Eton E100. It is the first
Ultralight with LW capability, and has the largest loopstick in the pocket radio
class at 4" long and .4" in diameter. With 1 kHz tuning steps and a 455 kHz IF,
it has all the right ingredients for DXing success, and is sure to receive
serious attention in the Ultralight Community.
Also showing exceptional sensitivity was the C.Crane SWP model, having
an excellent RF front end providing a superior signal-to-noise ratio on weak
signals. This AM-FM-SW model has also has 1 kHz tuning steps with a 455 kHz
IF, and has been found to be a superb platform for Slider Loopstick and
Murata IF filter modifications. At a very reasonable price of $45 from Amazon, it
brings great performance at a bargain price.
Photos of the five 2009 Shootout contenders have been uploaded to the
Yahoo group site "Ultralightdx," along with brief descriptions of each model.
The 2009 Shootout file should be completed soon, with full competitive
details on these (and all other) top Ultralight models. If you have yet to
experience the unique thrill and excitement of logging rare DX on a pocket radio,
consider this your invitation to join our fast-growing group! With the Far
East manufacturers fighting it out to bring the latest in innovative pocket
radios to the market each year, where else can you enjoy the latest in
technology, all at very competitive prices?
73, Gary DeBock
