    This is a fun story about striking up a friendly relationship in an unusual meeting place...the ionosphere (This is /before/ the internet, so I am not talking about cyberspace, but the actual ionosphere, augmented by the good old fashioned post office. :-)

I wonder why KOMO Radio in Seattle is making such a big deal out of this.
    In 1981, I was working for CKAY Radio in Duncan, BC, Canada on Vancouver Island. It was a 10,000 watt station, not a 50,000 watt power station. There were a group of Finnish DX ers as they are known, who travel to Lapland to sit in a hut and listen to signals from around the world. They have laid out antenna wires a kilometre long in two different directions. (If I remember the story correctly). Then they tune around the dial and when they pick up a signal, they would tape it and send it to the station hoping for a confirming letter back to add to their collection.
    Esa was one of those and he and his buddies immediately recognized that they were listening to a fellow Finn broadcasting from the west coast of Canada as I pronounced my name in the Finnish way. I responded with a confirming letter and also advised Esa that my girl friend and I would be in Finland the following summer. He and his wife Paivi immediately responded with typical Finnish hospitality and invited us to visit and stay with them. We did so and became good friends.
    So, it is fun to see such a story, but AM radio signals have been bouncing off the ionosphere since the beginning of radio and many DXers have heard stations from around the world.

    Ihmettelen, miksi KOMO Radio Seattlessa tekee niin iso juttu pois tästä. Vuonna 1981 työskentelin CKAY Radio Duncan, BC, Kanadan Vancouver Island. Se oli 10.000 wattia asema, ei 50000 wattia voimalaitos. Oli joukko Suomen DX-ers, koska ne ovat tiedossa, kuka matkustaa Lappiin istua kota ja kuunnella signaaleja eri puolilta maailmaa. On tuonut antenni johdot kilometriä pitkä kahteen eri suuntaan. (Jos muistan tarinan oikein). Sitten he virittää ympäri soittaa, ja kun he saa signaalin, he nauhaa ja lähettä se asema toivovat vahvistaa kirjeen takaisin lisätä niiden keräämistä.
    Esa oli yksi niistä, hän ja hänen ystävät heti tunsi, että he kuuntelivat muiden suomalainen lähettävät länsirannikolta Kanadan kuten lausutaan nimeni on Suomen tavoin. Vastasin, joilla vahvistetaan kirjeen ja ilmoitti Esalle, että minun tyttö ystävä ja mina olemme Suomessa seuraavana kesänä. Hän ja hänen vaimonsa Päivi heti vastasi tyypillinen suomalainen vieraanvaraisuus ja kehotti meitä käymään ja pysyä niiden kanssa. Teimme niin ja tuli hyviä ystäviä.
    Niin, se on hauska nähdä tällainen tarina, mutta en radiosignaaleja on Bouncing Off ionosfääriin alusta alkaen radio ja monet DXers kuullut asemat ympäri maailmaa. Nauti tarinasta.

    Juha-Matti Rantanen sai kuulla meitä 9:12 pm to 9:40 pm aikamme lauantai-iltana.
    Radiosignaaleja voivat matkustaa pitkiä matkoja, jos ilmasto-olosuhteet ovat aivan oikeassa, sillä ne voivat bounce signaaleja yleensä nimike ulos avaruuteen takaisin alaspäin maahan.
    Se ei ole liian tuntemattomia joitakin yötä hakemaan radioasemia selkeästi eri puolilla maata, vaikka selkeitä koko maapallo on melko saavutus (I'm guessing radioaalloille hän piristyi meni napa-reitti). Se fysiikka todennäköisesti ole liian kaukana siitä, miten SONAR toimii sukellusveneiden, ja miten ääni voi heijastua perustuu lämpötilan ja seurannut tiheyden muutoksia veteen.
