Info from the FCC on October 24th, that they are taking comments on
upping the 1% amount of IBOC to 10% Not good news if it happens.
Pat,
The FCC is asking for comments on raising the **FM** IBAC power to
10%. This is not AM power.
Just wanted it to be clear.
Kevin
FCC Seeks Comments on FM HD Radio Power Increase
The FCC's Media Bureau is seeking public comment on several recent
filings in the Commission's pending digital audio (HD Radio)
proceeding. A group consisting of 18 broadcasters (that operate over
1200 commercial and non-commercial educational FM outlets) along with
four of the largest manufacturers of transmitters is asking the
agency to increase the maximum operating power.
Current levels are capped at 1% of a station's authorized analog
power (-20 dB) to a maximum of 10% of a station's authorized analog
power (-10 dB). Based on an iBiquity study, the filing requested that
the Commission authorize voluntary increased digital operation power
for FM stations up to a maximum value of 10% of the station's
authorized analog power.
In addition, NPR has submitted its recently completed Corporation for
Public Broadcasting supported research on digital radio coverage and
interference. As part of this study, NPR investigated the effect of a
power increase to 10% of authorized analog power, and concluded that
such an increase could result in interference to reception of first
and second adjacent channel FM stations. NPR recommends that further
testing is necessary to determine if the higher power can be
permitted for FM stations.
The FCC is seeking comments on the broadcasters' filing, the iBiquity
study, and the NPR study. Comments are due by November 28, and reply
comments will be accepted until January 4. (10-23-08)
