Re: [IRCA] KMZQ 670

What radio-locator.com shows are coverage maps, not patterns. If you look they call them coverage maps. Sometimes they're very similar to each other, sometimes they're somewhat similar and every once in awhile they're not. The place to go for patterns is the FCC web site. Here are KMZQ and KBOI's night patterns. KMZQ's is from their CP, but recently they have applied for some changes.

KMZQ: http://www.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/1225072-101620.pdf

KBOI: http://www.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/504682-70019.pdf

It looks to me like they shouldn't bother each other, especially because KMZQ is only running 600 watts at night.

As Pete noted in the late 1990's KIRN paid KBOI to change from ND to directional at night (six towers; that can't have been cheap). They did that to clear the way to move to a new transmitter site and run considerably more power than they were. They got the CP they wanted but later decided against it. I wonder how much they paid KBOI.. Whatever it was they totally wasted it. KBOI's night pattern works very well. I almost never hear them; I'm about 50 miles from KIRN. When they were ND they had a very good signal in Southern California every night.

Earlier this year KIRN applied to move their daytime transmitter site only (they would have diplexed off an existing station) and increase to 20 KW (from 5 KW). Apparently they thought better of it because in early September they told the FCC to cancel the application.

Navigating the FCC web site takes some getting used to but once you get the hang of it all of the engineering studies for CP's and applications and a whole lot more are there for anyone to read. I find some of them absolutely fascinating.

If anyone would like some help in learning how to find the really good stuff on the FCC web site write me directly and I'll be happy to help. It's not hard.

Not sure why there is any confusion on this. Everyone should take a
look at www.radio-locator.com, punch up KMZQ and KBOI and then
compare their night patterns. They will not be in each other's face
at night. It is my understanding that sometime during the past three
years, KBOI reached an agreement with KIRN, the Farsi language
station near LA, whereby they (KBOI) would suck in some of their
southward-bound signal. I have logged KIRN here at night and would
anticipate that with their northbound day pattern, I will be able to
log KMZQ through KBOI some around LSS when reception to the south is
favorable.

R. Nacional (formerly RNE1) in at decent level 2230-2250 UTC on 585, 621, & 639 kHz, all in parallel. 621 the best which could be Canary Islands because they also carry R. Nacional. Discussion between man & woman in Spanish - quite clear in peaks but subject to fades.

Spain good here too, as well as France - especially 1206 and 1377.

Northern Euro's a bit less impressive though 1215 UK still good,
tangling with Spain at times.

Doing a spot of DXing in between watching the New England Patriots
losing (so far).

WFLF-540 noted at 9:25pm with Glenn Beck promo, 540-WFLA ID. In pretty
well, which isn't surprising considering the solar numbers. Earlier I heard an oldies station that sounded like it IDed as WASG. I realize that WGOP is
oldies, but the ID sure didn't sound like that. Anyone know if WASG is on
540 these days, moved from 550? And, are they oldies?
