Re: [IRCA] at&t sites

John Sampson said: Missed the first part of this thread but this aroused
my curiosity. Was this a spur off of the old AT&T backbone microwave
network?

John (and all who are interested), Buckhorn Mountain was an AT&T
microwave site linking Broomfield, Greeley, and Timnath in CO and
Cheyenne and Crow Creek Hill (Laramie) in WY. It was part of the first
transcontinental microwave network. The Timnath site linked to the
Longmont site which John mentioned. At Longmont the radio path
intersected the L4 hardened coax route which linked Denver and Platte
Junction WY. Platte Junction was an underground site on the east-west
transcontinental cable route. The Longmont site is very visible to
anyone travelling on I-25 between Denver and Fort Collins as it is right
next to the highway at what is known locally as Mead Mountain or Mead
Hill. The CDOT TIS station on 530 kHz that IDs as Mead is also located
at that point. The AT&T microwave equipment at this site has been
removed. But the tower is intact and still in use for mobile telephone
and two-way radio. The large building is externally intact. But I do not
know if the facility is still an active part of the underground cable
route. There is a lot of very interesting historic information about
AT&T Long Lines available on the Web.
