Re: [IRCA] GE SR 3

Bill;

"Lucky enough to find one" is probably right on. In 30+ years of going
to Yard Sales, Flea Markets and Goodwill (Thrift) stores, I saw ONE
Superadio - and I bought it. It was a SR II. It was listed as $5 but I
bought it along with an electric lawnmower and with a discount,
basically got the SR for free. It sure was beat up but the radio was
playing just fine. I wondered why she (the seller) simply unplugged it.
After getting it home and putting 6 new D batteries in it, I literally
jumped because it came right on. Someone obviously tried to do a dial
cord fix and messed up the fragile power switch. My orig 1981 SR works
good on FM but gets only two AM's - and they are local and the volume
control has to be maxed out to get them.

The SR III's must have not sold well at all. In 2002 at a Department
store in New Castle, Indiana, they had them stacked in a pyramid and
they were TWENTY TWO dollars. That stack never moved in two months as
the stack had the same packing marks in the same place. I bet that they
did not sell a single one!

Now AM-FM sets just aren't selling. They need an ipod dock, an MP3
jack, the weather band or some gimmick to sell. I wonder when Sony will
pull our beloved ULR's?

It looks like the SR3 is historee as I haven't seen any on the shelf
here at the local London Drugs outlets in Victoria,so I guess nobody was
interested in them as they were retro looking and operating and also not
as efficient in performance as the previous models such as maybe a run
off the assembly line without going through allignment tests, etc.as I
checked more than one and found that the dial indicator was a couple of
numbers off the mark of a signal on both AM and FM and they don't sound
as good as the older ones which were good for the odd time that music
was preferred over talk or search.A good place to look would be at yard
sales if you're lucky enough to find one.Bill in BC--jwkral@xxxxxxxx
