[IRCA] Marginal DU Morning at Grayland; 567-DU Audio Recorded
Hello All,
Motivated by a sudden interest to escape 98 degree heat at home,
yesterday our family decided to spend the night on the Washington ocean coast at
Grayland. We were fortunate to book Room 12 at the Grayland Motel on short
notice, which provided a chance to chase the elusive DU's again, especially with
the hot-rodded Ultralights.
Around 1130 UTC, there were already a few anemic DU carriers on the
modified ICF-2010 (19.5" loopstick), such as 531, 567, 612, 702, 738, 774, and
1098.. The signal levels were not near audio level until around 1200, and
then only on 567 and 774. Around 1215 the 567-DU reached threshold audio
level on both the "Super 2010" and the 20.25" loopstick SRF-39FP, and was
recorded on both. KVI-570 did not help matters any, although its splatter didn't
cover the DU audio. The carriers on 738 and 1098 were huge, but had no audio.
The recordings of the 567-DU (about 15 minutes on each radio) will be
researched for clues to identity. Since this frequency is wiped out by KVI-570 at
home, I have no experience chasing DX on 567, although the WRTH shows 2YA, a
50 kw station in Wellington, NZ. The format included both music and some
speech, unlike the 531-DU station heard on the SRF-T615 last month (with only
repeated music).
In any case, this morning's DU signal levels were far from having
adequate strength for stock Ultralight reception. The only really strong TP was
Radio Rossii on 279 at 1132 UTC, absolutely booming in on the "Super 2010."
180 had a moderate carrier, but 153 was very weak. For the first time in four
visits to Grayland, there was no audio from any of the Japanese
powerhouses-- only a moderate carrier from JOUB-774 at 1200. The seasonal changes are
making the Asiatic TP's take a dive, and it seems like chasing DU's is the
only real option at Grayland for a while.
